We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Sibiu

A school day in Sibiu stays inside a compact Saxon old town. Teams walk the Upper Town around Piața Mare, Piața Mică and the Bridge of Lies, then follow the guild towers and bastions along the city wall. For Key Stage 3, Medieval Old Town Sibiu: Hidden Stories of the 7 Towers is the most played route, starting in Parcul Astra. The Battle of Sibiu follows the fortifications from the Potters' Tower. Younger pupils can play Country Life at Astra Museum among the farmhouses and mills of the open-air museum at Dumbrava. Quests cover ages 8 to 18, so the city suits groups from Key Stage 2 to sixth form.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone.

    MoreLess

For under-14s, one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; 14 to 18 per the school's policy. Piața Mare, Piața Mică and Piața Huet are linked, mostly pedestrian meeting points.

  • Getting around

Sibiu's centre is compact and walkable; Sibiu railway station to Piața Mare is about 15 to 20 minutes uphill on foot.

    MoreLess

Tursib buses cover longer hops; visiting pupils need ordinary paid tickets, as free travel is for local pupils only.

  • Toilets

Public toilets in the old town are few, so plan stops in advance.

    MoreLess

Rely on museum facilities during a paid visit, the railway station, or cafés on Strada Nicolae Bălcescu, which usually expect a purchase.

  • Lunch

Classes eat packed lunches in Parcul Astra beside the old town or in the larger Parcul Sub Arini, about 15 minutes south on foot.

    MoreLess

Keep pupils off fountains and church steps in the squares and take all litter away.

  • Wet weather

The Brukenthal National Museum on Piața Mare (reduced pupil tickets), the Evangelical Cathedral on Piața Huet and the Council Tower charge small fees and suit groups.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, the quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Stairways and steep cobbled lanes link the upper and lower town, such as Pasajul Scărilor near the Bridge of Lies, and turn slippery when wet. Piața Mare gets very crowded during the Christmas market and June theatre festival.

What they learn

History (medieval town and defences)

Pupils see the guild towers (Potters', Carpenters' and Arquebusiers'), the Soldisch and Haller bastions, the city wall, the Council Tower and the Goldsmiths' gate. The Journeymen's House shows how craft guilds shaped and defended a Transylvanian Saxon town.

Geography

Pupils read a route through the Upper and Lower Town, find their way between squares, passages and towers, and estimate distances of 1 to 3 km. At the Astra Museum they compare rural homes and mills from different regions of Romania, such as Mahmudia, Rășinari and Desești in Maramureș.

English and modern languages

Pupils read instructions and solve text puzzles in teams. The 7 Towers quest is also available in German, Italian and Spanish, and The Battle of Sibiu in German. The Kid Quest runs in French and Spanish, so it suits a language class.

Citizenship and teamwork

Teams share one phone and split the roles of reading, navigating and answering. They agree answers together and keep to the meeting times and road-safety rules set by staff.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Sibiu

Which Sibiu quest suits which age group?
For ages 8 to 11, try Hidden Symbols of Sibiu – The Freemason Mystery (easy, an hour) or Country Life at Astra Museum. For 11 to 14, Hidden Stories of the 7 Towers, The Battle of Sibiu and The Lost Map of Sibiu work well. For 14 to 18, Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Sibiu adds a darker deduction story.
How long does a quest take with a class?
Most Sibiu quests take 1 to 1.5 hours. Hidden Stories of the 7 Towers takes about two hours over 2.7 km, and The Lost Map of Sibiu about two and a half. With a large group, add 15 to 20 minutes for staggered starts and regrouping. Two quests, or one quest plus a museum, fill a school day comfortably.
How many pupils per phone, and do pupils need accounts?
Use one phone per team of 3 to 5 pupils. A class of 30 needs six to ten phones, which can belong to staff or pupils. Pupils do not need accounts. Each phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand. Charge phones fully or bring power banks, as some quests recommend.
Where do we start, and how do we get there?
Most quests start in the old town: Parcul Astra, Piața Mică, Brukenthal Palace or the Evangelical Cathedral. All of these are a short walk from Gara Sibiu via Strada General Magheru. The Battle of Sibiu starts at Turnul Olarilor. Country Life at Astra Museum starts inside the open-air museum, which you reach on Tursib bus 13 from the station.
How much does it cost?
It costs 5 euros per pupil, and teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and you can preview a quest free from home before the trip. Country Life at Astra Museum also needs museum entrance tickets, which you buy separately from the museum.
What happens if it rains in Sibiu?
You can pause and continue later, or replay free within 30 days. For a covered alternative, the Brukenthal Museum on Piața Mare has pupil tickets: 12.50 lei for Brukenthal Palace, 9 lei for the History Museum in Altemberger House and 5 lei for the Natural History Museum. It also has visitor toilets.
Can a language class play in French, German or Spanish?
Yes, depending on the quest. Hidden Stories of the 7 Towers is available in English, Romanian, German, Italian and Spanish, and The Battle of Sibiu in German too. Kid Quest: Solve the case of the lost senses in Sibiu runs in Romanian, Spanish and French only, so it suits a French or Spanish class but not an English one.
