We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Cluj-Napoca

A school day with Questo in Cluj-Napoca is spent on foot in the compact old town: around Piața Unirii and St Michael's Church, along what is left of the medieval walls at the Tailors' Bastion, through Central Park and up Cetățuia Hill to the cross above the Someș. For Key Stage 3, Medieval Cluj: King Matia's Secret Treasure is the most played route, with 700 ratings. Younger pupils can follow Treasure Hunt in Cluj-Napoca – The Threat of Umbros from the Casino in Central Park. Year 10 to sixth form can take on Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows from the Matthias Corvinus statue. The quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

For under-14s, one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; for 14 to 18, follow the school's policy.

  • Getting around

CTP Cluj-Napoca runs buses, trolleybuses and trams but lists no group fare.

    MoreLess

Each pupil needs a 3.50 lei single ticket, valid on one vehicle only, and travel is free on Fridays. The centre itself is walkable.

  • Toilets

Public toilets are scarce in the centre.

    MoreLess

The automatic units in Central Park and Piața Mihai Viteazul have not always worked, so plan stops at museums, cafés or the station.

  • Lunch

Central Park Simion Bărnuțiu, on the south bank of the Someșul Mic close to the old centre, has lawns and benches for a packed lunch.

    MoreLess

Leave the spot clean and take all litter away.

  • Wet weather

The Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania (child tickets a few lei, closed Monday and Tuesday) and the National Museum of Transylvanian History (school group rates) are central.

    MoreLess

The quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Phones get taken from café tables on Piața Unirii. Keep the team phone in a hand or a zipped pocket, never on a table or bench; buses and busy squares carry the same risk.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Cluj-Napoca

Which quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2, try Treasure Hunt in Cluj-Napoca – The Threat of Umbros or Kid Quest: Solve the case of the lost senses. For Key Stage 3, Medieval Cluj: King Matia's Secret Treasure is the most played, followed by Walking with Iuliu Hossu and The Last Wager parts I and II. For Year 10 to sixth form, Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows works well.
How long does a quest take and how far do pupils walk?
Most Cluj quests take about 90 minutes. Medieval Cluj is about 1 hour 40 minutes over 2.6 km, including the climb up Cetățuia Hill. Walking with Iuliu Hossu takes nearly 2 hours over 3.1 km. Kid Quest is the shortest walk at 1.6 km. The Umbros quest covers 4.4 km, so allow 1.5 to 2 hours with younger pupils.
How many pupils share a phone, and do they need accounts?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, which can be a staff phone or one pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand on Wi-Fi. A charged phone or a power bank is sensible.
Where do we start and how do we get there?
Medieval Cluj starts at the Tailors' Bastion on Baba Novac Street. Murder Mystery starts at the Matthias Corvinus statue on Piața Unirii, and Umbros starts at the Casino in Central Park. Trolleybus 5 links the railway station and the airport with the centre, and all of these start points are short walks from Piața Unirii.
What does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and there is a free teacher preview from home. There is no guide to book and no time slot, so teams can start whenever the class is ready.
What if it rains?
Teams can pause and carry on later, and a quest can be replayed free within 30 days if the weather spoils the day. Close to the routes, the Art Museum in the Bánffy Palace on Piața Unirii offers reduced student and group tickets. The Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania is open Wednesday to Sunday.
Can a French or German class play in the language they are learning?
Yes, for some quests. Medieval Cluj: King Matia's Secret Treasure is available in French and German as well as English and Romanian. Walking with Iuliu Hossu is available in French, and Kid Quest in Spanish and French. Pupils read the stories and clues in the target language.
