We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Brașov

A school trip to Brașov is spent mostly inside and around the walls the Saxon guilds built, and in the Romanian quarter of Șchei just outside them. Key Stage 2 classes can start at Catherine's Gate with Brasov: The Warning Before the Siege (part I), which passes the guild bastions and Rope Street, or follow the old crosses of Șchei in Jewel of Brasov. Key Stage 3 groups can climb from the Black Church to the hilltop citadel in The Forgotten Treasure of the Teutonic Knights. The Brașov Workers Protest from 15 November 1987 quest takes classes into the city's communist past. The quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

Under-14s need one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; 14 to 18, follow school policy. Piața Sfatului suits regrouping.

  • Getting around

Old Town sights lie within a 10-minute walk of Piața Sfatului.

    MoreLess

RATBV buses (line 51 serves the station and Black Church) cost 5 lei a trip by contactless tap; free on Fridays.

  • Toilets

Free automated toilets stand at Piața Sfântul Ioan and Livada Poștei in the Old Town.

    MoreLess

Piața Sfatului and the promenade under Tâmpa have paid toilets; the station's paid toilet takes coins only.

  • Lunch

Parcul Nicolae Titulescu (Central Park), between Bulevardul Eroilor and Strada Nicolae Iorga, is the largest park, with benches and fountains.

    MoreLess

Keep picnics off church and Council House steps and bin all litter.

  • Wet weather

The History Museum in the Council House, the Weavers' Bastion and the Black Church (pupils 20 lei) suit groups.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Cobbled Old Town streets get slippery in rain, and the walk up to the Tâmpa cable car is steep. Tell teams not to climb Tâmpa's rocky trails during the quest.

What they learn

History (medieval and early modern)

How the Transylvanian Saxons defended a walled guild town. Pupils see the Weavers', Ropemakers', Drapers', Blacksmiths' and Graft bastions, the Black and White Towers, Catherine's Gate and Șchei Gate, and the citadel on Strajă hill. They also visit the Black Church and Casa Sfatului, the council house built in 1420.

Geography

Map reading and orientation on real routes, using the walls, gates and citadel hill as landmarks. Pupils compare the walled centre, Șchei outside the walls, the park and boulevards around Bulevardul Eroilor, and the main roads leading to the city's industrial edge.

English and modern languages

Pupils read and act on instructions in English. The Warning Before the Siege (part I) is also available in German, and Kid Quest: Solve the case of the lost senses in French and Spanish. Romanian versions exist for most quests, and the seven deadly sins quest is in Romanian only.

Citizenship and teamwork

Teams share one phone, agree roles, manage time and meet at checkpoints. The 1987 quest raises questions about protest, rights and life under a dictatorship.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Brașov

Which quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2 (ages 8 to 11): The Warning Before the Siege (part I), Jewel of Brasov, or the short, easy Kid Quest: Solve the case of the lost senses. For Key Stage 3: The Forgotten Treasure of the Teutonic Knights or the 1987 Workers Protest quest. For ages 14 to 18: Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows or Haunted Brasov: Face The Vengeful Ghosts.
How long does a quest take?
Most take 1 to 2 hours. Part I takes about 1 hour 40 minutes over 3.1 km, Jewel of Brasov about 1 hour 25 minutes over 3.4 km, and the Teutonic Knights quest about 1 hour 45 minutes over 3.3 km. The longest are Part II (about 2 hours 10 minutes) and the 1987 protest quest (about 2 hours, 5.4 km). Leave time for toilets and regrouping.
How many pupils share one phone?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, either a staff member's or a pupil's. A class of 30 makes six to ten teams. Send teams off a few minutes apart from the same start point so they do not all arrive together at narrow spots such as Rope Street.
Where do we start, and how do we get there?
Most quests start in or beside the walled old town. Part I starts at Catherine's Gate, the Teutonic Knights quest at the Black Church, the Murder Mystery at Piața Sfatului and Jewel of Brasov at Piața Unirii in Șchei. From the railway station, take bus 4 to Livada Poștei or bus 51 to Piața Sfatului and Piața Unirii. The 1987 quest starts at the Roman industrial platform, outside the centre.
What does it cost per pupil?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and accompanying adults play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and you can preview a quest from home for free first. Entry to sights such as the Black Church (20 lei for pupils) is extra and optional. The Teutonic Knights quest needs no attraction tickets.
What happens if it rains?
If the weather spoils the day, you can replay for free within 30 days. You can also pause a quest and pick it up again after shelter. Indoor options nearby are the First Romanian School museum in Șchei, the Brașov History Museum in Casa Sfatului (closed on Mondays) and the Black Church. Daylight is better: Part II should not be played at night.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
No accounts are needed. Each team's phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded before you set off. Charge phones fully. The 1987 protest quest is long, so bring a power bank for each team phone.
