Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Timișoara

A school day with Questo in Timișoara stays in the old Cetate district, between the Opera, Piața Victoriei, Piața Libertății and Piața Unirii. There is one school-ready quest here, Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Timisoara, a 90-minute, 12-stop case for pupils aged 14 to 18 (Key Stage 4 and sixth form). Teams walk 2.7 km from the Opera and back, past the Teatrul Național, the Fish Fountain and Parcul Castelului. The route crosses the square where Timișoara was declared Romania's first city free of communism in December 1989, so it pairs well with the Revolution Memorial.

Caution: Trams and heavy traffic ring the old town, notably at the crossings beside the Orthodox Cathedral and Opera. Cyclists also use the Bega riverside paths, so keep teams to one side.

What they learn

History

The route passes Piața Victoriei and the Opera, where Timișoara was proclaimed the first city free of communism in Romania on 20 December 1989; a natural link to the Cold War and the 1989 revolutions in Eastern Europe, especially with a follow-up visit to the Revolution Memorial.

Geography

Urban geography and orientation in a historic city centre, following a 2.7 km route by phone map through squares, parks and boulevards, and keeping track of position relative to fixed landmarks such as the Opera.

English and languages

Teams read and act on written clues and instructions in English; the quest is also available in Romanian for language learners or Romanian-speaking groups.

Critical thinking and teamwork

A murder-mystery case built over 12 stops, where teams collect evidence, test theories and agree a solution, sharing roles such as navigator, reader and note-taker.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Timișoara

Which Questo quest suits our class in Timișoara?
Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Timisoara is the one school-ready quest in the city. Because of its murder theme we recommend it for pupils aged 14 to 18, so Year 10 upwards and sixth form. It is not suitable for Key Stage 2 or most Key Stage 3 groups.
How long does it take and how far do pupils walk?
Allow about 90 minutes for the 12 stops and 2.7 km of walking, plus 15 minutes at the start to form teams and test phones. Teams can pause and continue, so a toilet break at Piața Unirii or a short rest does not lose their progress.
How many pupils per phone, and do they need accounts?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, either a staff member's or a pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand on wifi, for example at the hotel, so a class of 30 needs six to ten phones.
Where does the quest start and how do we get there?
It starts and ends at the Opera Națională Română on Piața Victoriei. From Timișoara Nord station, trams 1 and 2 reach the centre in about 10 minutes; Piața Victoriei is the stop after Piața Libertății. Single tickets cost 4 lei from a kiosk and are validated on board. The walk from the station takes about 15 minutes.
How much does it cost?
Questo costs 5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. Schools can pay by card or by invoice, and the lead teacher can preview the quest free from home before the trip to check content, route and timing.
What happens if it rains?
If the weather ruins the day, you can replay the quest free within 30 days, for example on the last morning of a residential trip. On the day itself, the Revolution Memorial on Strada Oituz and the National Museum of Banat at the Theresia Bastion are indoor options in the centre.
