About Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo is the spiritual and architectural heart of Florence, a square dominated by one of the most ambitious building projects in history: the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with Filippo Brunelleschi's revolutionary dome.

The first stone was laid on September 8, 1296, by architect Arnolfo di Cambio, on the site of a seventh-century church dedicated to Santa Reparata. The cathedral took nearly 150 years to complete, with Brunelleschi's dome, finished in 1436, solving an engineering problem that had defeated architects for decades. He built it without temporary scaffolding, using a herringbone brick pattern that supported itself as it rose, a technique still studied by engineers today.

The square holds three masterpieces in close proximity: the Cathedral, the Baptistry of San Giovanni (with its famous gilded bronze doors, which Michelangelo called the "Gates of Paradise"), and Giotto's Campanile, the 84-metre bell tower begun in 1334.

The cathedral's marble facade of green, white, and pink was recently restored (2015-2019), revealing colours more vibrant than Florentines had seen in generations. The entire complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

Climbing the dome (463 steps) gives you one of the best views in Italy, with Florence and the Tuscan hills spread below. If you're on a Questo quest through Florence, Piazza del Duomo is the centre of everything, and the dome above is a reminder of what happens when ambition meets genius.
