About Stavropoleos Monastery
The Stavropoleos Monastery is one of the most beautiful churches in Bucharest, a small and exquisitely detailed building tucked into the heart of the Old Town. Built in 1724, it is a masterpiece of the Brancovenesc architectural style, a uniquely Romanian blend of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Western European influences.
The church was founded by Ioannikios Stratonikeas, a Greek monk who had come to Bucharest from Pogoniani. He built the monastery within the grounds of an inn, and the inn's income supported the religious community. Ioannikios was later elected Metropolitan of Stavropolis (giving the monastery its name) and was buried here after his death in 1742.
The exterior is covered in delicate stone carvings, with vine motifs, rosettes, and religious symbols winding around the arched entrance porch. The interior, though small, is rich with murals and icons.
One of the monastery's most distinctive features is its focus on Byzantine music. The resident choir maintains the largest collection of Byzantine music books in Romania and performs regularly. The courtyard, surrounded by carved wooden galleries, creates a pocket of quiet beauty in the middle of the busy Lipscani district.
The monastery is free to visit and sits within walking distance of Bucharest's other Old Town highlights, including the Macca-Villacroise Passage and Caru' cu Bere, the city's famous 19th-century beer hall.
If you're on a Questo quest through Bucharest, Stavropoleos is the kind of hidden gem that makes exploration feel like discovery.
