We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Venice

A school day with Questo in Venice is spent on foot in the San Marco district, between St Mark's Square, Campo Santo Stefano, La Fenice and the Rialto Bridge, with one route going on to Santa Maria Formosa and San Zaccaria in Castello. For Key Stage 2, Venice Holy Heist A Father’s Last Hope starts at Ponte della Paglia and ends at the Doge's Palace in under an hour. Key Stage 3 classes can play The Lost Gold of Venice. Older pupils can take on Haunted Venice: Carnival of Shadows or Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Venice. Together the quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone; under-14s need one adult per 2 to 3 teams at agreed checkpoints, 14 to 18 follow school policy.

    MoreLess

Venice's 25-person group cap exempts school groups.

  • Getting around

Classes walk the car-free centre; ACTV vaporetti are the public transport.

    MoreLess

The ACTV Student Group ticket needs at least 10 pupils, a school self-declaration, and the whole group travelling together.

  • Toilets

Veritas turnstile toilets cost about 1.50 euros, at Piazzale Roma, Rialto, Accademia, San Marco and Giardini Napoleonici; the station's, by Track 1, cost 1.20 euros.

    MoreLess

    Museum toilets are often free.

  • Lunch

Eat on benches in Giardini Papadopoli near the station or the Giardini in Castello, not on the lawns.

    MoreLess

Sitting to eat on steps, bridges or monuments around St Mark's brings fines of 100 to 200 euros.

  • Wet weather

The Gallerie dell'Accademia (free for under-18s) and the Basilica di San Marco (small fee, book group slots) suit a class.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, the quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: On access-fee days, secondary school groups must register the free 'Sono in gita scolastica' exemption with total numbers; inspectors expect an identifiable group, so each adult should carry the confirmation.

What they learn

History, the Venetian Republic

Pupils visit the centre of the Republic's power, including the Doge's Palace, the Porta della Carta, St Mark's Basilica, the Clock Tower, the Campanile and the Columns of St Mark and St Theodore.

Geography

Urban geography of a city on water, with campi as public squares and bridges such as the Rialto and Ponte della Paglia as crossing points. Pupils follow routes of 1.8 to 3.1 km through narrow lanes, which builds map reading and orientation.

English and modern languages

Teams read the instructions and story text themselves. Venice Holy Heist A Father’s Last Hope can also be played in French, German or Italian, and Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Venice in Italian.

Citizenship and teamwork

Shared roles and group decisions, weighing up evidence in the murder mystery, and the city's no-sitting and no-eating rules and access fee as a real example of how a city manages visitors.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Venice

Which Venice quest suits which age group?
Venice Holy Heist A Father’s Last Hope suits Key Stage 2 (ages 8 to 11) and is the most rated, with 400 reviews. The Lost Gold of Venice suits Key Stage 3 (11 to 14). Haunted Venice: Carnival of Shadows and Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Venice have darker stories and are for ages 14 to 18.
How long does each quest take?
The Holy Heist takes about an hour over 1.8 km and 11 stops. The Lost Gold of Venice and the Murder Mystery each take about 1.5 hours (2.7 km and 2 km). Haunted Venice takes about 1.5 hours over 3.1 km. Allow extra time for crowds near St Mark's Square and for regrouping at checkpoints.
How many pupils share a phone?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, either a teacher's or a pupil's. A class of 30 makes six to ten teams. Teams start a few minutes apart so they don't crowd the same stop, which helps on busy spots like Ponte della Paglia and the Piazza.
Where do we start and how do we get there?
The Holy Heist starts at Ponte della Paglia, Haunted Venice at Piazza San Marco and the Murder Mystery at the Clock Tower. All three are a short walk from the San Zaccaria and San Marco Vallaresso stops. Vaporetto line 1 from Ferrovia or Piazzale Roma takes about 45 minutes. The free teacher preview shows the start of The Lost Gold of Venice.
What does it cost per pupil?
Questo costs 5 euros per pupil, and teachers and chaperones are free. You can pay by card or by invoice. Separately, on designated busy days the city charges day visitors aged 14 and over an access fee. Under-14s are exempt, so check cda.ve.it for your date.
What happens if it rains?
You can pause and continue later, and replay free within 30 days, which helps if you are staying several days. On the day, the Doge's Palace and Museo Correr are right by the routes. A school ticket costs 5.50 euros per pupil between 1 September and 15 March, and up to two accompanying teachers go free.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data, or the quest must be downloaded beforehand, for example on hotel wifi the night before. Charge phones fully and save staff numbers on each one.
