We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Florence

A school day with Questo in Florence follows the Medici and Michelangelo through the Renaissance centre: San Lorenzo and the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, then across the Ponte Vecchio into the Oltrarno around Santo Spirito and Palazzo Pitti. For Key Stage 3, Florence: Uncover the Medici Conspiracy starts at the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, a block from the main station, and can be played in five languages. For Key Stage 2 there is The Medici Story, a short loop from San Lorenzo Church, or Saving Michelangelo from Piazza Santo Spirito. Older pupils can try Death in the Shadows, a murder mystery among medieval towers. The quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone; under-14s need one adult per 2 to 3 teams at agreed checkpoints, 14 to 18 per school policy.

    MoreLess

Meet away from crowded Piazza del Duomo.

  • Getting around

Santa Maria Novella station to the Duomo is a ten-minute walk.

    MoreLess

Autolinee Toscane buses and trams need a 90-minute ticket per pupil, validated on boarding; AT's Blink sells ten at once.

  • Toilets

Paid public WCs (€0.60 to €1) are at Santa Maria Novella station, opposite the Baptistery, behind Mercato Centrale and on Borgo Santa Croce; Rinascente in Piazza della Repubblica has free ones.

    MoreLess

    Carry coins.

  • Lunch

Parco delle Cascine, west of the station on the T1 tram, suits a class picnic.

    MoreLess

Avoid church steps; eating on Via de' Neri or Piazzale degli Uffizi can bring fines up to €500.

  • Wet weather

Biblioteca delle Oblate behind the Duomo (free, closed Sundays), the covered Mercato Centrale and the free Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella suit small groups.

    MoreLess

A rained-off quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Pickpockets work the crowds on Ponte Vecchio, around the Duomo and at San Lorenzo market, so the team phone stays zipped away between clues and bags are worn in front.

What they learn

History (Renaissance)

The Medici family and their power base at Palazzo Medici, the Medici library, the Medici Chapels and San Lorenzo, Palazzo Pitti and Palazzo Strozzi; the life and work of Michelangelo through Casa Buonarroti, the Galleria dell'Accademia and the Opera del Duomo Museum.

Geography

Urban geography of a river city, contrasting the Oltrarno with the centre north of the Arno, the role of bridges such as the Ponte Vecchio, and the public squares (piazze) that structure the city; map reading and orientation over walks of 1.5 to 3.7 km.

English and languages

Reading and following instructions and clues closely. Uncover the Medici Conspiracy and Saving Michelangelo are also available in French, German, Spanish and Italian, so a languages class can play in the language they study; pupils also read Italian street and place names.

Citizenship and teamwork

Sharing roles in a team of 3 to 5, making joint decisions on puzzles, keeping to time between checkpoints, and behaving considerately in a historic centre where people live and work.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Florence

Which Florence quest suits which age group?
For ages 8 to 11 (Key Stage 2), The Medici Story (2.1 km from San Lorenzo Church) and Saving Michelangelo (3.7 km from Piazza Santo Spirito) work well. For 11 to 14, Florence: Uncover the Medici Conspiracy or The Kidnapper is on the loose in Florence. For 14 to 18, Death in the Shadows and The Damned of Stone, which has darker themes.
How long does a quest take?
Listed times are 56 to 90 minutes: about 75 minutes for the Medici Conspiracy, about 58 for Saving Michelangelo, about 56 for The Medici Story and about 90 for Death in the Shadows. Groups stop to read and solve puzzles, so plan around 1.5 to 2 hours for a class, plus time to walk to the start.
How many pupils share a phone, and do they need accounts or data?
Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone, which can be a staff phone or a pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand. Phones should be fully charged, and a power bank is sensible on a long day.
Where do we start, and how do we get there from the station?
The Medici Conspiracy starts at the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, a block from Firenze Santa Maria Novella station. The Kidnapper quest starts at Piazza dell'Unità Italiana, also near the station. The Medici Story and Death in the Shadows start at San Lorenzo, on the walk towards the Duomo. Saving Michelangelo starts across the Arno at Piazza Santo Spirito.
What does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or invoice, and you can preview a quest free from home before the trip. No guide or time slot is needed, so teams can start whenever suits your day.
What happens if it rains?
You can pause and carry on later, or replay free within 30 days if the weather spoils the day. Nearby indoor options include the covered Mercato Centrale in San Lorenzo and state museums such as the Medici Chapels and the Bargello, where under-18s go in free. Check the current entry conditions when booking, as adults need a reservation.
Can pupils eat a packed lunch anywhere in the centre?
Not everywhere. Florence has fined people for eating on Via de' Neri, Piazzale degli Uffizi, Piazza del Grano and Via della Ninna, and discourages snacking on church steps. Plan a lunch stop in advance, such as the Mercato Centrale food hall or the Fortezza da Basso gardens, and check the current rules.
