We had a great day on Monday, thanks in large part to Questo. Thank you so much for everything, from the clear communication beforehand to a very smooth user experience on the day itself.

We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Amsterdam

Amsterdam's school quests are walked on foot through the old centre and along the waterfront: the canal ring and Dam Square, the old Jewish quarter around Waterlooplein, the Plantage, the Jordaan, Vondelpark and, across the IJ by free ferry, Amsterdam Noord. For Key Stage 2, Canals of Amsterdam: Wonders of The City starts on Dam Square and passes the Begijnhof and the Westerkerk. Key Stage 3 classes can play Jewish Amsterdam: The Old Quarter or Amsterdam Shadows: The Plantage Resistance, which covers the German occupation and the deportations. Older pupils and sixth form can take Ghosts of Amsterdam, past the old Rasphuis gate and the Spinhuis lane. The quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone; for under-14s, one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints, 14 to 18 per school policy.

    MoreLess

Teams keep off the red cycle paths.

  • Getting around

Dam Square is about 750 m from Centraal Station, so the centre is walkable.

    MoreLess

Registered primary schools can pre-order the GVB Scholendagkaart (€2.60 per child); others buy the app-only GVB Group day ticket, five people each.

  • Toilets

About half the city's mapped street toilets are urinals only, so seated public toilets are scarce.

    MoreLess

Plan stops at Centraal Station, museums and department stores, where you will often have to pay.

  • Lunch

Packed lunches work well on the lawns of Museumplein or in Vondelpark next door, and the underground Albert Heijn on Van Baerlestraat covers forgotten lunches.

    MoreLess

    Take all litter with you.

  • Wet weather

The free Civic Guards Gallery, a covered walkway between Kalverstraat and the Begijnhof, and the OBA Oosterdok public library are good indoor stops.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Pickpockets work Centraal Station, Damrak, Dam Square and the crowded trams, so each team keeps its phone in a zipped pocket or a bag worn at the front between clues.

What they learn

History, the Dutch Golden Age

The VOC headquarters at the Oost-Indisch Huis, harbour towers such as the Montelbaanstoren and the Schreierstoren, guildhalls, and Rembrandt's house and neighbourhood.

Geography

The planned canal ring, the old harbour along the IJ and the former shipyard at NDSM in Noord. Pupils also read a city map and get their bearings with a ferry crossing between two banks.

Languages and English

Teams read and follow written instructions under time pressure. The Red Light quest can be played in French, German, Spanish or Dutch. Ghosts, Rembrandt and Ship-Sinking are also available in Dutch.

Citizenship and teamwork

Memorials such as the Homomonument and the Holocaust Names Memorial, how a city remembers persecution, and shared decision-making in small teams with one phone.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Amsterdam

Which Amsterdam quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2 (ages 8 to 11), Canals of Amsterdam: Wonders of The City starts on Dam Square. For Key Stage 3, use Jewish Amsterdam: The Old Quarter, Rembrandt's Mystery Quest or The Ship-Sinking Secret, and the Plantage Resistance quest for Year 9. For ages 14 to 18, use Ghosts of Amsterdam, The Cursed Houses in the Jordaan or the Red Light quest.
How long does a quest take?
Most school quests take about 1.5 to 1.75 hours over 2 to 3 km. The Red Light quest is shorter, at about an hour. Ghosts of Amsterdam runs about 3.5 hours over 4.7 km, and the Plantage Resistance quest is close to 3 hours, so plan a pause in either.
How many pupils share a phone?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, either a staff member's or one pupil's. A class of 30 makes six to ten teams. Send them off a few minutes apart so they don't bunch up at the same stop.
Where should we start, and how do we get there?
From Amsterdam Centraal, metro lines 51, 53 and 54 reach Nieuwmarkt and Waterlooplein in one or two stops. Those stations serve the Jewish quarter, Plantage, Rembrandt and Red Light routes. The Canals quest starts on Dam Square. For Noord, free ferries leave from behind Centraal.
What does it cost?
It costs 5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and you can preview the quest free from home before the trip.
What happens if it rains?
You can pause a quest and carry on later. If the weather spoils the day, you can replay free within 30 days. Nearby, the Rijksmuseum is free for under-18s, and the OBA Oosterdok library near Centraal is a free indoor stop.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
No pupil accounts are needed. Each team's phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand on Wi-Fi. Download it before you leave, especially for groups from outside the EU, whose phones may not have EU roaming.
