The experience

About this quest

Not long after Germany invaded the Netherlands in May of 1940, the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam was closed off from the outside world. Until Canadian forces liberated the city five years later.

Only very few of the inhabitants who were living there at the beginning of the War ever returned from the camps. However, the Plantage neighbourhood, instead, is known primarily for its stories of resistance.

What was it like on the day the Canadians finally arrived and the city was liberated?

Is this for you?

Who it's for

WW2 history readers and visitors heading to the Resistance Museum or the Holocaust Names Memorial get a 1.6 km loop through the Plantage, from Wertheim Park to the Dutch Theatre and the stumbling stones on Henri Polaklaan, with stories of occupation, resistance and liberation at 12 stops over close to three hours. If you want a light-hearted game or a live guide to question, pick something else: much of this story is about deportation.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the walk start and finish?
It starts at The Dock Worker statue and loops back to it at the end, so you finish where you began. The route covers about 1.6 km through the Plantage, passing the Botanical Gardens, Wertheim Park, the Resistance Museum, ARTIS Zoo and the Dutch Theatre.
How long does it take?
Plan for close to three hours. The walking distance is short, about 1.6 km, but there are 12 stops with stories and puzzles at each. You can pause at any point and continue later, so you can split it around a museum visit or a meal.
What if it is cold or raining?
The game is played outdoors on the streets of the Plantage. If the weather turns cold, you can pause and go inside to warm up at almost any location along the route, then pick up the game again where you left off.
Is it suitable for children?
The story covers the occupation, the deportation of Amsterdam's Jewish residents and the Holocaust, with stops at the Auschwitz Memorial, the Dutch Theatre deportation centre and the Holocaust Names Memorial. It suits teenagers and older children who are learning about the war more than young kids, given both the subject and the length.
Do we need to book a time, and can we play as a group?
No time slot is needed: you start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. One ticket covers your whole group, playing together on phones up to the number of devices stated for the quest.
Is Amsterdam Shadows: The Plantage Resistance self-guided?
Yes. The Questo app guides you between locations without a tour guide or fixed departure. You can start when it suits you and pause if needed.
Where does Amsterdam Shadows: The Plantage Resistance start and finish?

How many accesses does our group need?
This classic quest sells access per device and player. Each person who wants to solve clues on their own phone needs their own access.

Occupation and resistance context

Real acts of persecution, rescue and resistance in the Plantage

During the German occupation, the Plantage became a center of Nazi persecution: the Hollandsche Schouwburg was used as a deportation assembly point, while people connected with the nearby crèche and resistance networks helped children escape. This quest’s player mission is fictional, but the occupation, victims, rescuers and choices commemorated in the neighborhood are documented history. Playable languages: English.
