Frequently asked questions
Is this a good way to explore Jewish heritage in Amsterdam?
Yes. The route covers the old Jewish Quarter: the Portuguese Synagogue, the Uilenburgersjoel, the Jewish Museum and the Arsenal, the Spinoza statue and Rembrandt's house. Along the way the app tells the stories of diamond factories, canals, master painters and philosophers, and links the quarter to the origins of the Dutch Golden Age.
Where does the Jewish Quarter walk start and which places does it pass?
It starts and ends at the Jewish Museum and the Arsenal. In between you visit the Blue Bridge, Spinoza Statue, Rembrandt house, Oudeschans, the Peperbrug, Uilenburgersjoel, Gassan Diamond Factory, Waterlooplein, Mozes and Aaron Church and the Portuguese Synagogue, about 2.2 km in total.
Can we do a Jewish Quarter tour on our own, without a guide or a set time?
Yes. The quest is self-guided on your phone, so there is no guide and no group to join. You start whenever you like, the app leads you from stop to stop with stories and puzzles, and one ticket covers your whole group.
Do we need tickets for the museums or synagogues on the route?
No attraction tickets are required. The quest is played outdoors as you walk past the synagogues, the museum and the other stops. If you want to go inside any of them, that is a separate visit you would arrange yourself.
How long does it take, and can we pause?
Plan on about 1.5 to 2 hours for the 2.2 km walk, including time for the stories and puzzles. You can pause at any point, stop for a coffee or a rest, and continue later from where you left off.
Is Jewish Amsterdam: The Old Quarter self-guided?
Yes. The Questo app guides you between locations without a tour guide or fixed departure. You can start when it suits you and pause if needed.
Where does Jewish Amsterdam: The Old Quarter start and finish?
It starts at Jewish Museum and the Arsenal, Nieuwe Amstelstraat, 1011 PG Amsterdam, Nederland and finishes at The Blue Bridge, Blauwbrug, 1011 PT Amsterdam, Nederland. The route is approximately 2.2 km and includes 11 location-based puzzles.
How many accesses does our group need?
This classic quest sells access per device and player. Each person who wants to solve clues on their own phone needs their own access.
A community history marked by creativity, persecution and loss
Jewish communities became central to Amsterdam’s commercial, intellectual and cultural life from the late 16th and 17th centuries. The old Jewish quarter later suffered catastrophic destruction during the Nazi occupation and Holocaust. This quest connects surviving places and memorial landscapes while treating the people who lived here as history, not as props for a mystery story. Playable languages: English.
