About Venue Villita

Venue Villita is an event venue in La Villita, the historic little village beside the River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. It sits in a district often described as the city's first neighborhood, where weddings, concerts and dance performances now share space with centuries of local history.

The story behind it

"Villita" is Spanish for "little village," and the name suits a small cluster of lanes just off the river. The area is often called San Antonio's first neighborhood, and its history stretches back to the colonial era. Over the years it lived through the Spanish and Mexican periods, the Texas fight for independence and the turbulence that came with them. It later grew into a community of tradespeople and finally became the arts and culture district you see today.

One of its best-known stories belongs to the Cos House on Villita Street. Tradition holds that after the five-day Siege of Bexar in December 1835, the Mexican commander, General Martín Perfecto de Cos, surrendered to the Texan forces here. It is a short stroll from the venue.

What to look for

  • The Cos House on Villita Street, linked by tradition to the surrender that ended the Siege of Bexar in 1835.
  • The narrow lanes and low historic buildings of La Villita, which feel very different from the busy river path just beside them.
  • The small craft and gift shops and galleries that give the village its arts character.
  • The nearby Arneson River Theatre across the water, where the stage and the grassy seating face each other over the river.

Tips for your visit

  • Give yourself 45 minutes to an hour to wander La Villita, longer if you stop in the shops or for a meal.
  • Morning or late afternoon is the most comfortable time in Texas heat, and the light on the old buildings is at its best.
  • Access to the venue itself depends on what event is on, so check current opening hours and event schedules before you plan to go in.
  • The River Walk, HemisFair and the downtown sights are all close by, so La Villita fits easily into a walking day.
