O2 Ritz, Manchester, UK — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
About O2 Ritz
Built in 1928 as a Grade II listed venue, the O2 Ritz Manchester has danced through decades of cultural revolution. Originally constructed in 1927 as an elite dance hall destination, it features a legendary sprung maple dancefloor constructed with layered springs beneath to provide bounce and resilience. This original floor has been maintained through all refurbishments and remains unique among modern venues. The building's journey mirrors Manchester's musical evolution: from a destination for 1930s-1940s dancers to a 1960s nightclub, through the 1970s-1980s disco and electronic music scene, competing with The Haçienda on the same street. In 2011, a 2 million pound refurbishment by HMV added state-of-the-art sound and lighting while preserving the original Art Deco features. Today, operated by Live Nation Entertainment since 2015, it remains one of the few surviving 1920s dance halls still functioning. The building sits on Oxford Road, Manchester's cultural corridor, and stands as a testament to how venues can bridge historical preservation with modern concert technology. A Questo city game connects you to this iconic venue and Manchester's musical heritage.
