About Lucky crown
Lucky Crown is a stop at Slomškov trg 3 in Maribor, Slovenia, a 19th century house in the square named after Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek. It is worth a pause for its beautifully decorated wrought iron doors and window shutters, and for the small stories of town life that belong to the building.
The story behind it
The square takes its name from Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek, who is remembered for moving the seat of the diocese to Maribor in 1859, from St. Andraž in Austrian Carinthia. That move gave the town a new standing in the region, and the square still carries his name.
The house at number 3 dates from the 19th century. In the second half of that century, members of the German Reading Society are said to have met here, and the house also held a lottery branch at the time. A reading club and a lottery office under one roof say something about how varied everyday life in Maribor was in those years.
What to look for
- Study the wrought iron doors of number 3, which are decorated in fine detail and are the main reason the house stands out.
- Look at the window shutters on the same facade, which share the careful ironwork and craft of the period.
- Take in the proportions of the square itself, named after Bishop Slomšek, and think about the diocese move of 1859 that gave it its name.
- Notice the cathedral on the same square, a useful landmark for placing yourself in the old part of town.
Tips for your visit
- Plan about ten minutes at the house itself. It is a place to look at from the street rather than to enter, so do not expect to go inside.
- Go in daylight, when the ironwork on the doors and shutters is easiest to see in detail.
- Combine it with the cathedral on the square and a stroll through the old town. The Drava riverside is a short walk away.
- Visiting is free because you view the house from the public square. For anything with a door to open, check current opening hours.
See it on a quest
You can reach Lucky Crown on foot as one stop on Crowns of Maribor, a self-guided quest through the streets of the town. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, then sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look closely at details such as these doors instead of walking past. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. The quest is paid, and one ticket covers the whole group.
