Maribor 1532. The Turkish Gate

Maribor, 1532. The Ottomans are at the walls, and in the town's own dry moat, sappers are laying a charge meant to blow it open.

A cobbler's apprentice sees them first. A stolen turban. A hidden gate no map admits to. A fuse lit before anyone meant it to be.

Follow his path from the cathedral square, past a forgotten tower and down to the river, and finish at the round tower where this city once passed judgement.

Not a tour with questions attached. A legend, and a fuse to beat.

The mission: Your story in Maribor

MARIBOR, 1532

The Ottomans are at the walls. The city said no.

Sultan Suleiman's army, marching on Vienna, turned aside to take Maribor on the way. Weeks into the siege, the town holds — but holding is not winning, and everyone inside the walls knows it.

Deep one night, a cobbler's apprentice watching the ramparts sees something the exhausted garrison has missed: Ottoman sappers, moving gunpowder into the town's dry moat, laying a mine to blow the wall wide open.

There is no time to wake a sortie. He disguises himself, slips out through a gate few in the city admit to knowing about, and goes after the charge himself.

You have his path, his disguise, and the minutes before the sappers reach safety. That is all he had, too.

Mali čevljarček is a Maribor legend, not a documented event. The 1532 Ottoman siege of Maribor, and the statue at Glavni trg, are real.
