The plague is ending. A crime is only beginning.

For eight months, city physician Johann Meran signed the death certificates of people he had watched die. Then he began signing certificates for people he had never treated — and noticing that their houses changed owners before the graves were closed.

Meran kept a second register. His own.

Nine days ago he was due to bring it before the court. He never arrived. His satchel was found on the cathedral steps, where he had gone to read the parish register one last time: a torn register page, a coded note, and a sketch of a seal nobody in the city administration will admit to owning.
