About Carol Park
Carol Park (Parcul Carol I) is a large landscaped park on Filaret Hill in Bucharest, laid out in the early twentieth century and named for King Carol I. It is a calm green stretch of lakeside paths, formal alleys and monuments, and one of the city's best places to slow down between sights.
The story behind it
The park was created for the General Exhibition of 1906, which marked forty years of Carol I's reign as ruler of Romania. Carol was born a German prince, Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and his long rule shaped the modern Romanian state. The grounds were designed in the French landscape tradition, with terraces, water and long sightlines, and the hill gave the designers a natural stage for monuments.
The park also sits close to the city's older legends. Vlad III, called Dracula, ruled Wallachia in three separate periods: 1448, 1456 to 1462, and briefly in 1476. He died in late 1476, most likely in battle near Bucharest, but his tomb has never been firmly identified. Snagov Monastery, on an island north of the city, is traditionally linked to his burial, yet twentieth-century excavations there found nothing conclusive. His best-known fortress, Poenari, stands on a cliff above the Argeș River, roughly 150 kilometers northwest of the capital.
What to look for
- The monumental mausoleum at the top of the hill, which crowns the park and can be seen from many of its paths.
- The wide stairways and terraces that climb Filaret Hill, built to give the park a formal, ceremonial approach.
- The lake and its shoreline paths, where the planned layout of the park is easiest to read.
- The mature trees lining the long alleys, which show how much of the original design has survived more than a century on.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour for a relaxed loop, or longer if you want to sit by the lake.
- Morning and late afternoon are the most pleasant times, with softer light and fewer people on the paths.
- The park is a public space and walking its grounds is generally free, but check current opening hours and any access rules for the mausoleum area.
- Wear comfortable shoes, because the climb up the hill involves steps and slopes.
See it on a quest
The park is one stop on Dracula’s Secret Journal: The Bucharest Mystery, a self-guided walk themed around the Dracula story. You reach the park on foot as part of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle in what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
