The bronze statue of Robert Burns in Union Terrace Gardens captures Scotland's national poet in a thoughtful moment, holding a daisy in his hand. That detail isn't random. This Grade A-listed former bank, designed by its namesake architect in 1839, is one of Aberdeen's most impressive granite buildings, and that's saying something in a city nicknamed "The Granite City."

Walk up to the entrance and you'll pass through a pillared Corinthian portico, beneath a 6-foot terracotta statue of Ceres, the Roman goddess of plenty (a fitting guardian for a building that once held other people's money). Archibald Simpson (1790-1847) was the architect who essentially defined Aberdeen's look. He designed many of the city's most notable granite buildings, giving it the distinguished character it's known for today. Naming this building after him is a fitting tribute.

Today, it operates as a Wetherspoon's pub, which means you can admire a Grade A-listed masterpiece while nursing a reasonably priced pint. It's an unexpected combination that works surprisingly well.

Aberdeen's Mercat Cross has been standing in Castlegate since 1686, and it has seen quite a bit in those three-plus centuries. The hexagonal structure, 21 feet across and 18 feet high, is topped by a white marble unicorn with a gilded horn, perched on a Corinthian capital. The unicorn and shaft you see today are replacements from the mid-1990s; the originals are kept safe in the Tolbooth nearby.

The original Mercat Cross was erected in the early 15th century as the place where markets were held, public punishments carried out, and Royal proclamations read aloud. In 1664, the Town Council decided their cross wasn't grand enough compared to other Scottish burghs, so they commissioned architect John Montgomery to build the impressive structure that stands today.

The base is decorated with medallions illustrating Scottish monarchs from James I to James VII, supported by a series of open semi-circular arcades. History buffs might appreciate knowing that on September 20, 1715, the Old Pretender was proclaimed king right here at the Mercat Cross, a bold Jacobite statement in the heart of Aberdeen.

And the tradition continues. Even today, the Mercat Cross is where official proclamations are read, including the announcement of a new monarch. It's one of the most complete and best-preserved mercat crosses in Scotland.
