About Zagreb Cathedral

Zagreb Cathedral is the great Gothic church on Kaptol hill in Zagreb, Croatia, and one of the best-known symbols of the city. Its twin spires dominate the skyline of the old town, and the building has been shaped by centuries of rebuilding, fortification and repair.

The story behind it

The cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and stands at the heart of Kaptol, the old church quarter that grew up beside the market town on the neighbouring hill. The present Gothic building took shape in the Middle Ages, and the area around it was later fortified with walls. After a powerful earthquake in 1880 badly damaged it, the architect Hermann Bollé rebuilt it in a neo-Gothic style, which gave it the slender spires you see today.

Earthquakes have marked its story again. In 2020 a quake brought down the top of the southern bell tower, and restoration has been a long task since then. In front of the cathedral stands a gilded bronze monument of the Virgin Mary, set on a column above a fountain. Four angels at its base embody Faith, Hope, Innocence and Humility.

What to look for

  • Look up at the two spires and compare them, since the southern tower is the one that lost its top in the 2020 earthquake.
  • Walk to the monument in front of the cathedral and find the four gilded angels, each standing for a Christian virtue.
  • Notice how the pale stone facade, with its pointed arches and fine tracery, shows the neo-Gothic work of the late 19th century.
  • Stand back on the square to see the cathedral against the rooftops of Kaptol, then look for remnants of the old defensive walls around it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the exterior, the monument and a quiet look inside if the doors are open.
  • Check current opening hours and any restoration work before you go, as scaffolding can cover parts of the building.
  • Visit in the morning for softer light on the facade and fewer people on the square.
  • Dress modestly and keep your voice low if you go in, as it remains a working place of worship.
