About Vancouver Art Gallery
The Vancouver Art Gallery is the main public art museum of Vancouver, British Columbia, housed in a grand neoclassical former courthouse on Hornby Street. It sits at the heart of downtown and has long been a place for public gatherings and protest, which makes it as much a civic landmark as an art venue.
The story behind it
The gallery began in the early 1930s in a smaller building a few blocks west of its present site. It later moved into the old provincial courthouse, designed by architect Francis Rattenbury and completed in the early 1910s. The courthouse was reworked into a gallery in the early 1980s, which is the building you see today.
The site also carries a strong political history. In 1938, in the depths of the Great Depression, hundreds of unemployed men protesting the end of relief programs occupied several downtown buildings, including the gallery, as part of a wider sit-down protest. The occupation ended when police removed the men. Since then the plazas around the gallery have remained a natural meeting point for rallies and demonstrations.
What to look for
- The classical stone facade, with its columns, broad steps and copper-topped roofline, shows the building was designed as a courthouse and not as a museum.
- The stone lions beside the steps make a popular photo spot and a good meeting landmark.
- The plaza beside the building is often busy with gatherings, performances or small protests, a reminder of the gallery's role as a public space.
- Nearby Robson Square, with its modern terraced design, contrasts sharply with the older courthouse architecture next to it.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes to look around the outside and the plaza, or a couple of hours if you plan to visit the exhibitions.
- Seeing the building from outside costs nothing. To go inside, check current opening hours and admission details before you go.
- Late morning or late afternoon light is kind to the stone facade, and the plaza is usually livelier than early in the day.
- Robson Street, Robson Square and the shops and cafes of downtown are all a short walk away, so it fits easily into a wider stroll.
See it on a quest
On Downtown Vancouver: Espionage Adventure, the gallery is one stop on a longer walking route through the city centre. You reach it on foot, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group, so you can play at your own pace, whenever you like, with no guide to follow.
