About Roman Theatre of Trieste
The Roman Theatre of Trieste is an ancient theatre in the old part of the city, set into the lower slope of the San Giusto hill, a short walk from the waterfront. It is one of the clearest traces of Roman Tergeste, the town that stood here two thousand years ago, and it sits right among the modern streets and buildings.
The story behind it
Tergeste was a Roman town on the northern Adriatic, and like many such towns it had a theatre for plays and public entertainment. This one was built around the late first or early second century AD, using the natural slope of the hill to support the rows of seats, with the stage facing toward the sea.
After the Roman period the theatre was gradually buried and built over, and houses rose on top of it. The remains came to light when later buildings were cleared away, and the site was then excavated and studied. Today you see the curved seating area and the stage zone, part of the ancient structure and part careful restoration.
What to look for
- The curved rows of stone seating, which follow the slope of the hill exactly as the Roman builders planned.
- The stage area at the bottom, where you can picture the actors with the city and the sea behind the audience.
- The way ordinary apartment buildings press close around the ruins, showing how the modern city grew over the ancient one.
- The difference between original stone and restored sections, which helps you read what is truly Roman.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 15 to 30 minutes. Most of the theatre can be seen from street level, so it works well as a stop on a longer walk.
- Morning or late afternoon light is kinder to the stone and gives better photographs. Check current access arrangements before you go, as they can change.
- Combine it with other nearby sights: Piazza Unità d'Italia is close, and the climb toward the San Giusto hill and its cathedral begins not far away.
- The streets around the theatre are uneven and sloping, so wear comfortable shoes.
See it on a quest
The Trieste Challenge passes the Roman Theatre as one stop on a longer route through the city. You walk there on foot, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the ruins closely rather than just glancing at them. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no set departure time.
