About Church of Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo

The Church of Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo is a neoclassical Catholic church in Trieste, standing at the head of the Canal Grande in the Borgo Teresiano district. Its columned, temple-like front closes the view along the canal and makes it one of the most recognisable landmarks of the city centre.

The story behind it

The church is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, whose title Taumaturgo means wonder-worker. It was designed by the architect Pietro Nobile, and building work began in the 1820s and ran into the late 1840s. Its austere classical style suits the planned, orderly streets of the Borgo Teresiano, the grid of 18th-century Habsburg Trieste that grew up around the canal.

The canal itself was dug in the mid-1700s so that merchant ships could unload close to the warehouses and counting houses of the new quarter. The church was placed at its end, and the setting still shows how the Habsburg port city saw itself: commercial, tidy and confident.

What to look for

  • The front of the church has a row of tall Ionic columns beneath a triangular pediment, a deliberate echo of a Greek or Roman temple.
  • Stand on the Ponte Rosso, the bridge over the canal, for the classic view of the church framed by the water and the moored boats.
  • Look along the canal side to find the Serbian Orthodox church of San Spiridione, whose blue domes make a striking contrast with the pale classical front of Sant'Antonio.
  • Notice how the church sits exactly on the axis of the canal, a piece of town planning that is easy to miss until you walk the length of the water.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the church and its square, or longer if you want to sit by the canal.
  • It is a working church, so dress modestly, keep voices low and check current opening hours and service times before you go in.
  • Morning light and the early evening both flatter the facade, and the canal is calmer before the cafes fill up.
  • The Ponte Rosso square, the canal-side cafes and the statue of James Joyce on the bridge are all within a minute or two on foot.
