About Molo Audace
Molo Audace is a long stone pier that reaches out into the Gulf of Trieste from the edge of Piazza Unità d'Italia, in the Italian city of Trieste. It is the city's favourite place for a walk over the water, and it is tied to the day in 1918 when the Italian navy first arrived in Trieste after the First World War.
The story behind it
The pier was first known as Molo San Carlo, a name from the Habsburg era, when Trieste was the empire's main seaport. For generations it was a working landing place on the waterfront, close to the merchants' quarter and the old harbour.
Its modern name comes from the torpedo boat Audace, which tied up here on 3 November 1918 and brought the first Italian soldiers ashore as Trieste passed from Austria-Hungary to Italy. The pier was renamed in her honour a few years later, and today it is part of how the city remembers that moment. Locals simply treat it as the city's front porch, and walking to the end and back is a habit for many of them.
What to look for
- Look at the very end of the pier, where a compass rose is set into the stone, a good spot to take in the whole curve of the bay.
- Turn back toward the shore to see the facades of Piazza Unità d'Italia and the grand waterfront buildings lined up behind it.
- Look along the edge of the pier for the mooring bollards, which are a reminder that this was a landing place for ships before it became a promenade.
- Look out across the gulf, where on a clear day you can see ships at anchor and the hills curving around the coast.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for a slow walk to the end and back, longer if you like to sit and watch the water.
- Late afternoon and sunset are especially pleasant, when the light turns warm over the bay and the square behind you.
- The pier is open air and right on the sea, so bring a layer if the wind is up, and take care on wet stone.
- You are steps from Piazza Unità d'Italia, the Canal Grande and the old town, so it pairs easily with a wider walk through the centre.
See it on a quest
The Trieste Challenge passes Molo Audace as one stop on a longer walk through the city centre. You reach the pier on foot, the app tells you about the place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a good way to see the waterfront in context rather than as a single photo stop. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no fixed departure time.
