St Catherine's Passage is a narrow medieval lane in Tallinn's old town, running beside the ruined wall of St Catherine's Church, with craft workshops opening onto it. It is the most atmospheric shortcut in the city.

The Viru Gate towers are the picture-book entrance to Tallinn's old town, two stout stone towers with ivy and flower stalls between them. Everything medieval starts here.

Raekoja plats is Tallinn's town hall square, enclosed by merchant houses and the only surviving Gothic town hall in northern Europe. Old Thomas, the weathervane on its spire, has watched the square since the sixteenth century. The Christmas market here is among the oldest in Europe.
