About The National Assembly of Bulgaria

The National Assembly of Bulgaria is the seat of the country's parliament, a neo-Renaissance building in the centre of Sofia on Knyaz Alexander Dondukov Boulevard. It was built in the 1880s, soon after Sofia became the capital of a newly liberated Bulgaria, and it still sits at the heart of the city's political life. It stands on a broad square that is easy to reach on foot from many of Sofia's main sights.

The story behind it

Sofia was chosen as the capital in 1879, after Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule, and the young state needed a home for its legislature. The National Assembly building was begun in the mid 1880s to a design by the architect Konstantin Jovanović and has housed the parliament ever since. Its calm, formal look was meant to give the new state a dignified public face.

The area around it has seen much of Bulgaria's modern history. Communist rule ended in 1989, and in 1990 the huge red star that had crowned the former Communist Party headquarters nearby was taken down, a moment many Bulgarians remember as the end of an era. Stories about what became of the star are common in Sofia, but they are hard to verify, so treat them as local lore.

What to look for

  • The neo-Renaissance facade, with its symmetrical lines and columned central entrance, is designed to look stately rather than showy.
  • The equestrian monument to the Tsar Liberator, Alexander II, stands in the square in front of the building and honours the Russian ruler linked to Bulgaria's liberation.
  • The national flag and state emblem mark the building as the working home of parliament, so you may see guards and officials coming and going.
  • Look along the boulevard for the yellow paving that runs through this part of central Sofia, which gives the square its distinctive colour.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan on 15 to 30 minutes for the building and the square, longer if you combine it with the neighbouring sights.
  • Entry for visitors is limited because it is an active parliament, so check current rules if you hope to see the interior.
  • Morning and late afternoon light is gentler on the facade and works well for photos.
  • The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Sofia University are a short walk away, which makes this an easy stop in a central city stroll.
