About The Monument of Saint Sofia
The Monument of Saint Sofia is a gilded statue standing on a tall column in the centre of Sofia, Bulgaria, in the heart of the city's main crossroads. It honours the idea of Holy Wisdom that gave the Bulgarian capital its name, and it replaced a Soviet-era statue of Lenin on the same spot. Today it is one of the most recognisable city landmarks and a natural starting point for a walk through the centre.
The story behind it
For decades a statue of Lenin stood on this site. It was removed in 1990, and around the turn of the millennium the new monument rose in its place. Sofia is named after the old church of Saint Sofia, and that name means Holy Wisdom, so the statue was a deliberate choice to put the city's own namesake back at its centre.
The figure does not portray one single person. She blends several ideas: the saint whose name the city carries and the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena, are the two most often mentioned. The crown, the laurel wreath and the owl in her hands all point to wisdom and victory. The statue is the work of sculptor Georgi Chapkanov. It was not welcomed by everyone, and some locals still find her stern face and dark, dramatic look unsettling, which has made the monument a favourite subject of city gossip.
What to look for
- The crown, the laurel wreath and the owl, which are the three classic symbols of wisdom and victory that the statue carries.
- The sheer height of the column, which makes the figure easiest to appreciate from the pavement below and from a little way back across the square.
- Her face and gilded surface, which catch the light very differently in morning sun and at dusk.
- The busy crossroads around the base, where old Sofia, Roman-era remains and modern city life all meet within a few steps.
Tips for your visit
- The monument stands in an open public area, so you can see it at any time without a ticket, but you cannot go inside it.
- Ten minutes is enough for the statue itself; add more time if you want to explore the streets and ancient ruins close by.
- Late afternoon and early evening give the best light on the gilded surface, and the column looks striking when lit after dark.
- Take photos from a few different angles, since a single close view does not show the full height of the column.
See it on a quest
The monument is one stop on Sofia's Hidden Gems: Sofia Obscura, a self-guided walk through the less obvious side of the city. You reach the statue on foot as part of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is right in front of you. There is no guide and no group to join, so you can start whenever you like, and one ticket covers the whole group.
