Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Warsaw

A Questo school day in Warsaw takes place on foot across Muranów and the streets around Castle Square. Time-Machine Hidden In Muranów, for pupils aged about 8 to 11, starts at the Blue Skyscraper on Plac Bankowy. It loops past Krasiński Palace and its garden lake, the Monte Cassino monument, the Pawiak Prison Museum and the Arsenal. Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows, for ages 14 to 18, begins at Sigismund's Column. Teams question their way past Pac Palace, the Jan Kiliński Monument and St Anne's Church. Krasiński Garden lies between the two routes, so a class can play one quest before lunch and visit the other area afterwards.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

Under-14s: one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints in the mostly car-free Old Town; 14 to 18, per the school's policy.

  • Getting around

ZTM's reduced-fare 75-minute group ticket (22 zł, zone 1) covers up to 10 pupils on metro, tram and bus.

    MoreLess

Old Town to the Palace of Culture is about 2 km on foot.

  • Toilets

Public toilets in the centre are few and not always open, so plan stops at museums, the Złote Tarasy shopping centre beside Warszawa Centralna station, or cafes.

  • Lunch

The Saxon Garden and Krasiński Garden have benches and shade for packed lunches.

    MoreLess

Keep food and noise away from the guarded Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Saxon Garden's edge.

  • Wet weather

POLIN, the Royal Castle and the National Museum each have a weekly free-entry day, so check and book ahead.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, the quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Wide roads such as Marszałkowska and Aleje Jerozolimskie are crossed via underpasses or long signals, and police can fine jaywalking. Red cycle paths often run along pavements, so keep teams off them.

What they learn

History, Second World War and occupation

The Muranów quest stops at the Pawiak Prison Museum, the Monument to the Battle of Monte Cassino (1944) and the Monument of the Soldier of the Polish Army. It finishes at the Blue Skyscraper, built on the site of the Great Synagogue that the Germans destroyed.

Geography and orientation

Following a 3 to 3.6 km loop through a real city, reading the map on the phone, finding each stop and noticing how central Warsaw was rebuilt. The Old Town, reconstructed after wartime destruction, is UNESCO-listed.

English and modern languages

Reading and following written instructions on the spot. The Muranów quest is also available in German, so a German class can play it in the language they are learning.

Citizenship and teamwork

Looking at how the city remembers its dead through monuments and a prison museum, taking turns with the phone, sharing out roles and keeping to the agreed meeting times.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Warsaw

Which Warsaw quest suits which age group?
Time-Machine Hidden In Muranów is pitched at ages 8 to 11 (upper Key Stage 2) and can be played in English or German. Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows is for ages 14 to 18 (GCSE and sixth form) and is in English only. Neither quest is written for 11 to 14, so Year 7 and 8 staff should preview the Muranów quest to judge whether it suits.
How long does each quest take?
Both take about an hour and a half. The Muranów quest covers 3.6 km and 11 stops, starting and finishing at the Blue Skyscraper. The Murder Mystery covers 3 km and 12 stops, starting and finishing at Sigismund's Column. Allow extra time for toilets and headcounts. Playing one quest, eating lunch in Krasiński Garden and then a second activity fits comfortably into a school day.
How many pupils share a phone?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, which can be a staff phone or a pupil's. A class of 30 makes 6 to 10 teams. Send them off a few minutes apart so they spread out along the route rather than crowding each stop.
Where do the quests start and how do we get there?
The Muranów quest starts at the Blue Skyscraper, Plac Bankowy 2, beside Ratusz Arsenał metro station and the tram and bus stops on the square. The Murder Mystery starts at Sigismund's Column on Castle Square, which you can reach from the Stare Miasto tram and bus stops or the plac Zamkowy bus stops.
What does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and accompanying adults go free. You can pay by card or by invoice. Staff can preview the whole quest free from home before the trip, which helps with risk assessments and with deciding whether the wartime stops in Muranów suit your class.
What happens if it rains?
You can pause a quest and carry on later, or replay it free within 30 days. The POLIN Museum in Muranów is close to the route. Entry is free on Thursdays, it is closed on Tuesdays and it opens at 10:00. On free days, mornings are quieter than afternoons.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
No accounts are needed for pupils. Each team's phone needs mobile data during the quest, or the quest can be downloaded beforehand on hotel or school wifi. On a UK phone, check roaming before you travel.
