Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Munich

A school day with Questo in Munich is spent on foot between Marienplatz, the Residenz, Ludwigstraße and the Englischer Garten, with one history route taking older pupils to Königsplatz. Teams of three to five share one phone and solve puzzles at places such as the Mariensäule, the Siegestor, the Viktualienmarkt and the Eisbach wave. For Key Stage 3, Secret Society in Munich: Test of the Lion and Munich Minds: The Case of Sigmund Fraud are the strongest choices. For Key Stage 4 and sixth-form historians, The Inception of the Nazi Movement in Munich traces the party's early years from the Hofbräuhaus to the Braunes Haus. The quests suit pupils aged 11 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

For under-14s, one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; for 14 to 18, follow school policy. Marienplatz is car-free but crowded.

  • Getting around

The old town is walkable; for longer hops take MVV U-Bahn, S-Bahn or trams.

    MoreLess

One MVV Group Day Ticket covers five adults, and two pupils up to Klasse 9 count as one.

  • Toilets

Central public toilets are scarce and mostly paid (50 cents to 1 euro), for example below Marienplatz and at Viktualienmarkt.

    MoreLess

Hauptbahnhof charges 1.50 euros; museums, department stores and the Mathäser cinema are fallbacks.

  • Lunch

Classes picnic in the Hofgarten or the Englischer Garten, a short walk north of Marienplatz, or on the lawns of the Kunstareal by the Pinakotheken.

    MoreLess

Park toilets are often free; take litter away.

  • Wet weather

The Alte Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne and Museum Brandhorst admit under-18s free, so only adults pay.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, the quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Marienplatz and Hauptbahnhof are Munich's main pickpocket spots, and crowds peak when the Glockenspiel plays at 11am and noon (also 5pm in summer). Teams should keep the phone and bags zipped away.

What they learn

History

The Bavarian monarchy and the Wittelsbach court, seen at the Residenz, the Alter Hof, Max-Joseph-Platz, Wittelsbacherplatz, the Monument to King Ludwig I and the Siegestor.

Geography

Urban geography from the medieval old town around St. Peter's, the Viktualienmarkt and the Fischbrunnen to the planned 19th-century Ludwigstraße and the Englischer Garten along the Eisbach. Pupils also practise map reading and orientation as teams find each stop.

Languages

Six of the seven quests can be played in German as well as English, so German classes can play in the target language. Every quest involves careful reading of written instructions and clues.

Citizenship and teamwork

How a city remembers its past at memorial sites such as the NS-Dokumentationszentrum, the war memorial and the White Rose memorial. Teams share one phone, divide up roles and agree answers before moving on.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Munich

Which Munich quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 3, choose Secret Society in Munich: Test of the Lion, Munich Minds, Magical Munich or Save Your Friend. Test of the Lion and Magical Munich are marked advanced, so they suit Years 8 and 9. For ages 14 to 18 there are the Nazi movement history quest, the Murder Mystery and Breweries and Bars. We do not list a Munich quest for primary pupils.
How long does a quest take?
Allow roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Save Your Friend, the Murder Mystery and Breweries and Bars take about 1.5 hours over 2 to 3 km. Test of the Lion takes about 2 hours 10 minutes. Munich Minds is the longest at about 2.5 hours and 3.8 km. Add time for a lunch break; teams can pause and continue later.
How many pupils share a phone, and do they need accounts or data?
One phone per team of 3 to 5 pupils, either a member of staff's or a pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts. Each team phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand on school wifi. Bring power banks, as two Munich quests ask for a fully charged phone.
Where do the quests start and how do we get there?
Test of the Lion starts at the Mariensäule and Breweries and Bars at Marienplatz (S-Bahn, U3, U6). Munich Minds starts at the Siegestor and Save Your Friend at St. Ludwig, both near Universität station (U3, U6). The Nazi movement quest starts at Königsplatz (U2). The app shows each start point, so you can check it in the free preview.
How much does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and accompanying adults play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, which suits most school finance offices. You can also preview any quest free from home before deciding, which helps with the risk assessment and choosing the route.
What happens if it rains?
If the weather ruins the day, you can replay the quest free within 30 days. For a nearby indoor option, the NS-Dokumentationszentrum near Königsplatz is free to enter and fits well with the Nazi movement quest for older pupils. The Hofgarten and other lunch spots are outdoors, so plan somewhere covered for lunch.
Can pupils go into the buildings on the route?
The quests are played outdoors in front of each place. Save Your Friend says plainly that teams do not enter the places. On the Breweries and Bars route, pupils solve puzzles outside the brewery houses and inns without going in. Museums are an optional extra and not part of any quest.
