We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Hamburg

A school day with Questo in Hamburg follows the Elbe and the working harbour. From the ferry piers at Landungsbrücken, teams walk past the Old Elbe Tunnel and the museum ship Rickmer Rickmers, through the Portuguese quarter to St Michael's church, then into the red-brick Speicherstadt warehouses and on to the Elbphilharmonie and HafenCity. For Key Stage 2 and lower Key Stage 3, Waterfront Hamburg and Columbus in Hamburg: The Forgotten Voyage are the strongest choices. The second starts at Jungfernstieg on the Inner Alster and passes the Town Hall and St Nicholas. Key Stage 4 and sixth form groups can try Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Hamburg. Quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

Under-14s need one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints; 14 to 18 follow school policy. Do not meet at crowded Jungfernstieg.

  • Getting around

The centre is walkable, about 15 minutes from Hauptbahnhof to Rathaus. hvv's Tagesticket Jugendgruppe (11+ under-21s with a teacher, ordered 10 days ahead) is only for Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein schools.

  • Toilets

Public toilets in the centre are few and usually paid, so pupils should carry coins.

    MoreLess

Reliable fallbacks are the paid toilets at the Hauptbahnhof, museums, department stores on Mönckebergstraße and cafes.

  • Lunch

Planten un Blomen, the free park by Dammtor station, has wide lawns and benches for a class; the Alster steps at Jungfernstieg also work.

    MoreLess

Take all litter away with you.

  • Wet weather

The Elbphilharmonie Plaza (free same-day ticket), the Rathaus entrance hall and the tiled Old Elbe Tunnel are free indoor options.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Hamburg's cycle paths often run along the pavement, marked in red or grey paving, and cyclists ride fast. Brief pupils to stay off them, especially around the Alster and Jungfernstieg.

What they learn

History

Hamburg's growth as a port city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, through the Speicherstadt warehouses, the Old Elbe Tunnel, the sailing ship Rickmer Rickmers and the cargo ship Cap San Diego. Churches as landmarks: St Michael's, and the ruined St Nicholas, kept as a memorial to the Second World War.

Geography

The urban geography of a river port, comparing the old warehouse district with the new HafenCity waterfront and the Elbphilharmonie; how a city crosses a river; following a route of 3.5 to 4.4 km and finding your way between stops.

English and modern languages

Reading and following written instructions as a team; all three quests are also available in German, so German classes can play in the language they are learning.

Citizenship and teamwork

Sharing one phone, splitting roles such as reader, navigator and puzzle solver, keeping to agreed checkpoints and crossing busy streets safely.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Hamburg

Which Hamburg quest suits which age group?
Waterfront Hamburg and Columbus in Hamburg: The Forgotten Voyage are set for ages 8 to 11, so they suit Key Stage 2 and also work for Year 7 and 8. Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Hamburg is for ages 14 to 18, so it fits Key Stage 4 and sixth form.
How long does each quest take?
Waterfront Hamburg takes about three hours over 3.5 km with 13 stops, so it fills most of the day once you add a lunch stop. Columbus in Hamburg takes about two and a half hours over 4.4 km. The Murder Mystery takes about 90 minutes over 2 km.
Where do the quests start, and how do we get there?
Waterfront Hamburg starts at Landungsbrücken, on S-Bahn S1 and S3 and U-Bahn U3. Columbus in Hamburg starts at Jungfernstieg, on S1, S3, U1, U2 and U4. The Murder Mystery's start point is shown in the app, so check it in the free teacher preview before the day.
How many pupils share a phone, and do they need accounts?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, which can be a teacher's or a pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts. Each team's phone needs mobile data, or the quest downloaded beforehand, and a power bank is a good idea for the longer routes.
How much does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or by invoice, and you can preview the quest free from home before you book the trip.
What happens if it rains?
There is no booking slot, so you can start late, pause when a shower comes and carry on afterwards. If the weather ruins the day, you can replay the quest free within 30 days, which helps if your group is staying in Hamburg for several days.
Can older pupils go round without an adult?
For 14 to 18 groups, teams can go without an adult if your school's policy allows it, with a meeting point, a finish time and staff phone numbers. For under-14s, plan one adult for every 2 to 3 teams within sight, with agreed checkpoints along the route.
