We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Barcelona

Barcelona's school quests are concentrated in the old city: the Roman and medieval lanes of the Gothic Quarter around the Cathedral and Plaça Nova, El Born and Parc de la Ciutadella, with longer routes through the Modernista Eixample and up Montjuïc. For Key Stage 3, Barcelona Detective Mystery follows the Roman walls from the Barcino letters, and Gaudí's Barcelona takes in the Sagrada Família, Sant Pau and Casa Batlló. Sixth form can play The Gothic Trail, the most reviewed route in the city, while Key Stage 2 classes have The Lost Dragon and a Kid Quest in Ciutadella. Quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone.

    MoreLess

Under-14s: one adult per 2 to 3 teams, agreed checkpoints at named squares in the narrow Gothic Quarter; 14 to 18 per school policy.

  • Getting around

TMB's T-grup is one shared card for 70 metro, bus or tram journeys over 30 days, with 75-minute transfers.

    MoreLess

The T-escolar needs Barcelona IMEB accreditation, so most visiting schools use T-grup.

  • Toilets

Free-standing public toilets are scarce, with a few self-cleaning cabins on La Rambla, the waterfront and major squares.

    MoreLess

Plan stops at stations, museums, shopping centres or El Corte Ingles.

  • Lunch

Parc de la Ciutadella, beside El Born, is the usual shaded picnic spot.

    MoreLess

Barcelona's coexistence byelaw, tightened in February 2026, fines damage to public space, so keep pupils off monuments and bin litter.

  • Wet weather

The Picasso Museum is free for under-18s with booking, and MACBA and CCCB in El Raval are free for under-16s.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, replay the quest free within 30 days.

Caution: Pickpockets target La Rambla and central metro stations such as Liceu and Passeig de Gracia, often grabbing phones as doors close. Keep each team's phone in hand or a zipped pocket.

What they learn

History

Roman Barcino (the Roman wall, the Temple of Augustus on Carrer del Paradís, the Via Sepulcral Romana and the Barcino letters at Plaça Nova); medieval Barcelona (the Cathedral, Santa Maria del Pi, Santa Maria del Mar and El Call, the old Jewish quarter); the 1714 siege, remembered at the Fossar de les Moreres and El Born.

Geography

Urban geography and map reading, comparing the narrow medieval lanes of the Gothic Quarter with the street grid of the Eixample; orientation using numbered points in Parc de la Ciutadella; how markets such as the Boqueria, Santa Caterina and Sant Antoni shape their neighbourhoods.

Modern languages

The Gothic Trail, Gaudí's Barcelona and Rescue in Barcelona can be played in Spanish, French or German, so a language class can play in its target language. All pupils practise reading and following written instructions.

Citizenship and teamwork

Teams share one phone, divide roles, agree answers together and keep to checkpoints and meeting times in a busy city centre.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Barcelona

Which Barcelona quest suits which age group?
For Key Stage 2 (ages 8 to 11): The Lost Dragon in the Gothic Quarter and Kid Quest in Parc de la Ciutadella. For Key Stage 3: Barcelona Detective Mystery, Gaudí's Barcelona, Rescue in Barcelona and the Joan Miró quest. For GCSE and sixth form: The Gothic Trail, Murder Mystery and Magical Barcelona at Montjuïc, which have darker stories.
How long does a quest take?
Most Barcelona quests take 90 minutes to two hours and cover 1.3 to 4.6 km. The Gothic Trail is the shortest at about 50 minutes. With a class, allow extra time for regrouping, toilets and road crossings. Teams can pause and carry on later, so two quests fit into a school day.
How many pupils share a phone?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, which can be a teacher's or a pupil's. A class of 30 makes six to ten teams. Teams can start a few minutes apart from the same point, so one large group does not fill the narrow Gothic Quarter lanes.
Where do we start and how do we get there?
The Gothic Quarter quests start around Plaça Nova and Plaça del Pi. Jaume I station (L4) is two minutes from Plaça Nova, and Liceu (L3) is by Plaça Reial. For Parc de la Ciutadella use Arc de Triomf (L1) or Ciutadella Vila Olímpica (L4). The Joan Miró quest starts at Sants Station.
How much does it cost?
Questo costs 5 euros per pupil, and teachers and accompanying staff play free. You can pay by card or by invoice. There is no booking slot, so you start whenever the class is ready. A teacher can preview the quest free from home before the trip.
What happens if it rains?
If the weather ruins the day, you can replay free within 30 days. For a dry break nearby, El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria is free to enter, shows excavated medieval streets and has toilets. Mercat de Santa Caterina, a covered market across Via Laietana from the Cathedral, is another option.
Do pupils need accounts or mobile data?
Pupils do not need accounts. Each team's phone needs mobile data, or the quest can be downloaded beforehand on hotel Wi-Fi. Charge phones fully. Some Barcelona quests suggest bringing a power bank, as the longer routes run for two hours.
