We are a group of language students and we played the game with our teacher: a great and fun way to practise, and learn interesting stuff about our city that we didn't know.

Quests for classes

Quests a class can play in Valencia

Valencia's school quests stay mostly inside the walkable old town around Plaza de la Virgen, with one route along the Turia Gardens in the old riverbed and one in El Cabañal, the old fishing quarter by the sea. For Key Stage 2, Highlights of Valencia: Time Travel Hero passes the Silk Exchange, the Central Market and the Serranos Towers in about an hour. Key Stage 3 classes can take the tram out for Valencia - Secrets of El Cabañal, and Years 10 to 13 can work through Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Valencia, also playable in Spanish. Together the quests cover ages 8 to 18.

Teams, supervision and logistics

  • Teams and supervision

Teams of 3 to 5 share one phone; under-14s need one adult per 2 to 3 teams with agreed checkpoints, 14 to 18 follow school policy.

    MoreLess

Ciutat Vella's lanes split teams fast.

  • Getting around

Ciutat Vella is walkable, about 15 minutes from Estació del Nord.

    MoreLess

EMT buses cost 2 euros; its EMTicket app activates up to 20 tickets together, so a class of 30 needs two phones.

  • Toilets

Public toilets are scarce in Ciutat Vella.

    MoreLess

Plan stops at Estació del Nord, at free museums such as MuVIM or the Museu de Belles Arts, or at a café where pupils buy something.

  • Lunch

Classes picnic in the Jardí del Túria, the old riverbed park along the old town, or the Jardins del Real (Viveros).

    MoreLess

Keep off church steps and fountains, and bin all litter.

  • Wet weather

The Museu de Belles Arts, MuVIM and Centre del Carme are free indoor options; check group booking rules first.

    MoreLess

If rain spoils the day, the quest can be replayed free within 30 days.

Caution: Valencia's bike lanes often run along pavements and through the Jardí del Túria, carrying fast cyclists and e-scooters. Brief pupils to stay off marked lanes and look both ways before crossing them.

What they learn

History

Medieval Valencia through the Serranos Towers (a city gate completed in 1392), the Silk Exchange and the Portal de Valldigna; the early 20th century Central Market; the Holy Grail tradition in the city (Holy Grail quest); and El Cabañal's past as a separate fishing town, El Poble Nou de la Mar, until the late 19th century.

Geography

How a city responds to flood risk, with the Turia diverted after the 1957 flood and its old bed turned into a 9 km park; the contrast between the walled old town, the seafront quarter and the modern City of Arts and Sciences; map reading and orientation in narrow lanes and along a line of bridges.

English and modern languages

Reading and following written instructions and clues under time pressure; Spanish-language versions of the Murder Mystery and the Detective Mystery, and a French version of Kid Quest, for MFL groups.

Citizenship and teamwork

Sharing one phone and agreeing roles (navigator, reader, timekeeper), making decisions as a group, behaving respectfully in busy public squares, markets and a working neighbourhood, and local traditions such as the Fallas, seen at the Falla Plaça la Creu in El Cabañal.

Teacher FAQ

Questions about Valencia

Which quest suits which age group?
For ages 8 to 11, start with Highlights of Valencia: Time Travel Hero or The Secret of the Sleeping River in the Turia Gardens. València HOLY GRAIL: The Research is longer and rated medium difficulty, so it suits confident Year 6 teams. For Key Stage 3, Valencia - Secrets of El Cabañal. For Years 10 to 13, Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Valencia.
How long does a quest take?
Time Travel Hero is about 53 minutes of play over 3 km and The Secret of the Sleeping River about 49 minutes over 4.7 km. Secrets of El Cabañal takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, the Murder Mystery about 1.5 hours and the Holy Grail quest about 1 hour 40 minutes. With a class, add 20 to 30 minutes for staggered starts and regrouping.
How many pupils share a phone, and do they need accounts?
Teams of 3 to 5 pupils share one phone, which can be a staff phone or one pupil's. Pupils do not need accounts or their own devices. Each team's phone needs mobile data during the quest, or the quest downloaded beforehand on school or hotel wifi so it runs without a signal.
Where do we start and how do we get there?
Time Travel Hero and the Murder Mystery start at Plaza de la Virgen, about a 15 minute walk from Xàtiva or Colón metro. The Sleeping River and Holy Grail quests start at the Serranos Towers, near the Pont de Fusta tram stop. For El Cabañal, take tram 4 or 6 from Pont de Fusta to Cabanyal, about 10 minutes.
What does it cost?
5 euros per pupil. Teachers and chaperones play free. You can pay by card or ask for an invoice for the school's finance office. Staff can preview the quest free from home before the trip, which is useful for a risk assessment and for choosing between routes.
What happens if it rains?
Valencia has free indoor options close to the routes: the Museu de Belles Arts is free and open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 20:00, and the National Ceramics Museum on the Time Travel Hero route is free for under-18s. If the weather ruins the day, the class can replay the quest free within 30 days.
Is there a version in Spanish or French for a language group?
Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Valencia and Valencia Detective Mystery: Infiltrate a Secret Society can be played in English or Spanish. Kid Quest: Solve the case of the lost senses in Valencia is available in English, Spanish, French and Romanian. The last two have few or no ratings yet, so preview them from home first.
