The San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián (Donostia) is the city's museum of Basque society, housed in a 16th-century Dominican convent at the foot of Mount Urgull, on the edge of the Old Town. It is one of the oldest museums in the Basque Country and one of the few buildings in the old quarter to come through the destruction of 1813.

The story behind it

The museum was founded in 1902, but it only moved into this building about thirty years later. The building itself dates from the mid-16th century and was a convent of Dominican friars, designed in a transitional style between late Gothic and Renaissance. Its cloister is unusual: cloisters normally sit beside the church, but the steep mountain behind left no room, so this one was built in front of it.

When the Anglo-Portuguese army entered San Sebastián in 1813, the convent was badly damaged and lost its main altarpiece. Some twenty-five years later the friars were expelled and the complex became an artillery barracks. In the 20th century it found its new life as a museum, and a more recent refurbishment added an extension dug discreetly into the mountainside, so the old stone walls still dominate the square.
