About Villa Finale: Museum & Gardens

Villa Finale: Museum & Gardens is a Victorian Italianate mansion in the King William Historic District of San Antonio, Texas. It is best known as the home of preservationist and collector Walter Mathis, who restored the house and filled it with his collections. His work also helped rescue the neighborhood around it.

The story behind it

The house was built in the 1870s in the Italianate style, in a district first settled by German merchants and named after King Wilhelm I of Prussia. By the 1960s the area had slipped into decline, and many of its grand houses were neglected or at risk of demolition.

In 1967 Walter Mathis bought the house and began a careful restoration. He went on to restore other buildings in the neighborhood, and the name Villa Finale is usually explained as a nod to this house being the last of his projects. After his death the property passed to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and was opened to the public as a museum, with its rooms and gardens kept much as he arranged them.

What to look for

  • The Italianate architecture of the house, with its tall proportions and decorative detailing, which shows the style favored by prosperous Victorian-era families.
  • The densely filled rooms, where furniture, art and decorative objects reflect a lifetime of collecting rather than a staged period display.
  • The gardens around the house, which give a sense of how outdoor space was part of a grand home in this neighborhood.
  • The neighboring houses along King William Street, each in a different style, which show how much of the historic district has survived.

Tips for your visit

  • Interior visits are normally by guided tour, so check current opening hours and whether you need to reserve ahead.
  • Allow about an hour for the house and gardens, and extra time to stroll the surrounding streets.
  • Morning or late afternoon is pleasant for walking the district, especially in the warmer months when the shade of the older trees helps.
  • The San Antonio River and the Riverwalk are a short walk away, and other historic houses in King William are close enough to combine in one outing.
