About The Stanford Mansion

The Stanford Mansion is a grand 19th century house at 802 N Street in Sacramento, built in 1856 and best known as the home of Leland Stanford, California's 8th governor and the founder of Stanford University. Today it is Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park and serves as the state's ceremonial reception center, which makes it one of the most important historic houses in the California capital.

The story behind it

The house went up in 1856 and later became the residence of Leland Stanford, who served as governor of California and went on to found Stanford University. The mansion grew along with his public life and stood a few blocks from the seat of state government, so it was both a family home and a place with a role in the city's political story.

In 1900 the Stanford family gave the estate to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento. The diocese ran a children's home on the property until 1978. After that the State of California bought the property, and it became a state historic park and the capital's ceremonial reception center.

What to look for

  • Look at the overall shape of the house, a large and formal 19th century mansion that still stands out among the modern buildings of downtown Sacramento.
  • Notice the tall windows and the careful symmetry of the facade, which show how much status a house like this carried in the 1850s and 1860s.
  • Find the state historic park signage near the entrance, a reminder that the building has gone from private home to children's home to public landmark.
  • Stand back on the street and consider how close the mansion sits to the Capitol area, which helps explain why it became a ceremonial venue.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the exterior and the surrounding blocks, and more if you plan to take a tour inside.
  • Interior access is usually by guided tour and can change, so check current opening hours and tour availability before you go.
  • Morning or late afternoon light is kind to the facade and makes photographs easier, and the streets are calmer than at midday.
  • The mansion is in downtown Sacramento, so it combines easily with a walk to the State Capitol and Capitol Park nearby.
