About The Equestrian Statue of Christian X
In the heart of Aarhus, on Bispetorv right beside the cathedral, a bronze king sits calmly on his horse, right arm extended, gazing across the square. This is the equestrian statue of King Christian X, and the story behind it is one of quiet defiance.
Christian X reigned from 1912 to 1947, but it's what he did during the Nazi occupation of Denmark that earned him a permanent place in Danish hearts. While German forces controlled his country, the king made a point of riding his horse through the streets of Copenhagen every single day, alone, without a bodyguard. These daily rides became a powerful symbol of Danish resistance and unity. The king refused to leave, refused to hide, and refused to abandon his people. He also provided financial support for the secret transport of Danish Jews to Sweden, helping to save thousands of lives.
The statue was sculpted by Danish artist Helen Schou, who worked on it for twelve years, starting in 1944 while the occupation was still ongoing. She aimed to create a balance between movement and stillness, giving equal prominence to both horse and rider. The result was unveiled in 1955.
Standing beside Aarhus Cathedral, the statue is easy to find and free to admire. If you're on a Questo quest in Aarhus, pay attention to the details of the sculpture. The story of Christian X is one of the most moving in modern Danish history, and there might just be a challenge here that brings it to life.
