About Punto Pizzo Free
Punto Pizzo Free is a stop on Via Vittorio Emanuele in Palermo, Sicily, tied to the story of pizzo, the extortion racket run by the Sicilian Mafia, and to the people who say no to it. It matters because it puts a hidden, everyday part of the city's recent history in front of you, on the street where it played out.
The story behind it
The Sicilian Mafia, also called Cosa Nostra, grew out of Sicily and over the years worked its way into local politics, trading votes and favours for influence. In the 20th century it also spread abroad, especially to the United States.
Pizzo is one of its oldest tools. The word comes from the Sicilian term for a bird's beak, and the image is of a bird pecking a little from everyone's plate. Usually it means money demanded from shopkeepers and businesses, but it can also be a demand to hire certain people or buy certain goods. Those who refused could expect intimidation, such as glued locks or funeral flowers left at the door. The system worked because it spread fear and gave the Mafia a hold over daily life. A "pizzo free" label is the opposite: a public statement that a place does not pay.
The red notebook of the anti-Mafia judge Paolo Borsellino, which vanished after the 1992 bombing that killed him, is still one of the great unsolved mysteries of modern Italy.
What to look for
- Look for signs or stickers in shop windows along the street that mark businesses as pizzo free.
- Notice how ordinary the surroundings are, with shops, doors and shutters, which is exactly where pizzo was demanded.
- Pay attention to the street itself: Via Vittorio Emanuele follows the ancient Cassaro, the oldest axis of Palermo, running from Porta Nuova down to the sea.
- Glance at the locks and shutters of the nearby shopfronts and think about the padlock threat that gave pizzo its everyday menace.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 10 to 15 minutes at the stop itself, longer if you want to read the surroundings and pause on the street.
- Morning or late afternoon is more comfortable for walking in Palermo, especially in the warmer months.
- If it is a shop or a business, check current opening hours before you plan to go in.
- The same street leads towards Palermo Cathedral and the Quattro Canti, so it combines easily with a wider walk through the historic centre.
See it on a quest
The best way to understand this place is to arrive at it as part of a story. Palermo Undercover: Mafia Secrets is a self-guided quest that passes Punto Pizzo Free on foot as one stop on a longer route through the area. The app tells you about each place as you reach it and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look closely at the street instead of walking past. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
