About Chiesa di S. Maria degli Agonizzanti
The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Agonizzanti is a small church in Palermo, on Via Giovanni da Procida, linked to a brotherhood that prayed for the dying and for prisoners about to be executed. It matters less for its architecture than for the grim story it keeps, one of the stranger chapters in the city's religious and civic history.
The story behind it
The Congregation of the Agonizing was founded in Palermo in the early 1600s with a single purpose: to pray for the souls of the dying. Its members worked largely out of public view, and their ceremonies were known for their severe, theatrical character. Accounts describe brothers kneeling before a Crucifix with a rope around their necks, in equal number to the people condemned to die, so that the coming execution was always in front of them.
Their best-known practice linked the church to Piazza Marina, where executions were carried out. Members gathered in the church while others formed a chain of people between the square and the church door. News of each stage of the execution was passed along by word of mouth, until the moment of death reached the church. The blessing of the Sacrament was timed to coincide with it, so the prayers were said at the very moment the condemned person died.
What to look for
- Look at the church as it sits in the street itself, a modest building among the houses, and picture how a chain of people could connect it to the square.
- Walk toward Piazza Marina and think about its old role as the place of public executions, which is the other end of the story.
- Notice the Palazzo Chiaramonte Steri on Piazza Marina, a grand medieval building that once served as a seat of the Inquisition.
- Spot the huge, tangled roots of the old fig trees in the garden on Piazza Marina, which shade the square today.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on a short stop of ten to fifteen minutes for the church itself, longer if you pair it with the square.
- Small Palermo churches are often open only at certain times, so check current opening hours or ask locally if you hope to go inside.
- Late afternoon is pleasant for walking the surrounding streets, when the heat eases and the light is softer.
- Piazza Marina is close by, with cafes and shade, so you can sit and read about the church story where it took place.
See it on a quest
Haunted Palermo: The Vengeful Ghosts Of The Past is a good way to see this church, because it suits the place. You reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot. The haunted theme fits a church with a story like this one. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
