Osaka Food Origins: A Merchant Out of Time

Osaka, present day. You were a merchant of the Edo period, sailing to Dotonbori to trade in the finest goods Japan could offer. A storm at sea hurled you 300 years into the future.
The canal still shimmers. The smell of takoyaki and grilled offal still drifts through the alleys. But the signs are burning with electric light, and nobody recognizes your clothes. The city they once called the Kitchen of the Nation has kept its promise, and then some.
This walking quest through Osaka's iconic food district traces the real history of Japan's most celebrated cuisine, from the origins of street food to ancient market traditions, through the temples and theatres that shaped the city's soul.

The mission: Your story in Osaka

You are a merchant from the Edo period, 18th-century Japan.

You have traveled by boat from your village to trade in Dotonbori, Osaka, the city they call Tenka no Daidokoro: the Kitchen of the Nation.

Every rice merchant in the country knows its name.

You have dreamed of seeing it your whole life.

A violent storm catches your vessel on the open sea.

When you regain consciousness, the world has changed around you. The canal is still there. The smell of grilling food still hangs in the air.

But the lights are blinding, the buildings reach toward the sky, and the people wear clothes you have never seen in any market.

You are 300 years in the future.

Somehow, this city you barely knew has grown into something extraordinary, and the food that once made it famous has only become stranger and more magnificent.

You do not yet know how to get home.

But you know, with the certainty of a merchant who has traveled far, that the answers lie somewhere in these streets.

Truly enjoyed. We saw many things we possibly would never have come across without this questo. Nice peaceful end to our questo after seeing some busy and enthralling sights.

The puzzles were good for people of all skill levels, except some are out-of-date and don't match clues, plus orange/red for shrine colors puzzle is confusing, especially since shrines have been removed and replaced with pictures. Overall, a great way to guide through the area.

The puzzles were simple, but it was a fun way to discover places we might not have otherwise.
