Maison Henri IV, Lyon — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
About Maison Henri IV
At 4 rue Juiverie in the heart of Vieux Lyon stands a Renaissance mansion wrapped in royal legend and aristocratic glamour. Built during the reign of Francois I by Claude Paterin, this magnificent property at 1,800 square metres is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Lyon's old town. The legend that gives the house its name claims that both King Francois I (around 1515) and King Henry IV (in 1600) stayed within its walls, though historians haven't been able to confirm either royal visit with certainty. That hasn't stopped Lyonnais from embracing the story wholeheartedly, and a 19th-century bust of Henri IV mounted on the facade ensures the legend lives on for every passerby. What is certain is the building's extraordinary architectural heritage: Renaissance proportions, elegant stonework, and the kind of generous spaces that only the wealthiest families of 16th-century Lyon could afford. In 1989, the house underwent a thoughtful renovation that converted it into 18 apartments at a cost of 5 million francs, preserving the historic character while adapting the spaces for modern living. The location on rue Juiverie (Jewish Street) adds another layer of history, connecting the building to Lyon's medieval Jewish community. Questo's Vieux Lyon trail passes this regal mansion where royal legends and Renaissance architecture create one of the old town's most photogenic corners.
