The mission: Your story in Lemgo
Lemgo kept a register. Every accusation of witchcraft, every name coughed up under torture, went into one volume the town called the Black Book. In 1715 the council carried it out onto the market square and burned it in front of everyone. By then about 250 people were dead: a schoolmaster, a cantor, a merchant widow, a pastor, and above all ordinary women.
I wrote that book. Not my name, you will not find my name anywhere in this town, but my hand. Fifty years of it.
The paper is ash. The names are not. They are still here: in a plaque, in an archive, in a block of marble somebody set deliberately in your path, in the house of the mayor who signed for a hundred deaths. Ten stops. Walk them, answer what I ask, and I will read you the entries. Two of the years you pick up on the way you will need at the end. Write them down. I always did.
