About Saint-Louis Cathedral
Saint-Louis Cathedral is the Catholic cathedral of Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, and one of the best-known buildings in the city centre. The church you see today dates from the 1890s and is famous for its metal framework, which sits behind a Romanesque-inspired stone exterior. It is an easy and rewarding stop for anyone exploring the old streets of the town.
The story behind it
Fort-de-France was known as Fort-Royal in the colonial period, and a place of worship has stood in the town since its early days. The first churches were modest, and over the years the site saw several buildings come and go, as fire, earthquakes and hurricanes took a heavy toll on the Caribbean towns of the region.
The present cathedral was designed by the architect Pierre-Henri Picq and completed in the 1890s. Building it around an iron and steel frame was a practical answer to a place exposed to tremors and storms, and it gives the interior a lightness you do not expect from the outside. The church is dedicated to Saint Louis, the medieval French king, and still serves as the seat of the archdiocese.
What to look for
- The exposed metal structure inside, with slender columns and ribs that show how unusual this church is among cathedrals.
- The stained-glass windows, which fill the nave with coloured light on a bright afternoon.
- The Romanesque-inspired facade and its twin towers, best photographed from the street in front of the entrance.
- A colourful mural near the cathedral, part of the street art that has gone up on walls around Fort-de-France since the International Festival of Mural Art began in 2019. Murals change, so see what is on the walls the day you visit.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the cathedral itself, longer if you want to sit and take in the interior.
- It is a working church, so dress modestly, keep your voice down, and avoid walking around during services. Check current opening hours before you go.
- Morning light is pleasant and the streets are cooler, which also helps with the heat of the day.
- The cathedral is in the middle of the city centre, so shops, cafes and other landmarks are a short walk away.
