About Malecon
The Malecon is the seafront promenade of Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, facing the bay on the edge of the city centre. It is where the town meets the water, and it matters most during carnival, when the waterfront fills with stalls and stages and the season ends with the burning of Vaval.
The story behind it
Malecon is a word borrowed from Spanish for a seafront embankment or wharf, and it is used in many countries. In Martinique it has become the everyday name for this stretch of waterfront. Cruise ships dock close by, so visitors from all over the world step off into the heart of Fort-de-France.
The Malecon belongs most fully to the city in carnival season, when stalls and stages line the water and the celebrations spill right to its edge. On Ash Wednesday the effigy of Vaval, the king of carnival, is burned here in a traditional ceremony. It marks the end of the festivities and the start of Lent.
What to look for
- The wide view across the bay, which gives you a sense of why the city grew up around this harbour.
- Ships and boats coming and going along the waterfront, including cruise ships when one is in port.
- During carnival season, the stages and stalls set up along the promenade and the crowds that gather around them.
- The easy rhythm of local life along the water, with people strolling, meeting friends and watching the bay.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for a stroll and some photos, longer if you want to sit and watch the bay.
- Late afternoon is a pleasant time to come, when the heat eases and the light over the water softens.
- It is an open waterfront promenade, so there is no building to enter, though events may change access, so check local information in carnival season.
- The historic centre of Fort-de-France is within easy walking distance, so combine the Malecon with the streets and squares nearby.
