The ancient Subura was a crowded district near Rome’s political center, associated with housing, shops and a socially mixed population. Empress Messalina became the subject of hostile sexual stories written by elite male authors after her death, so their claims require caution. This quest turns those sources into a fictional mystery rather than presenting every scandalous anecdote as established fact.
