About St. Patrick's Tower
St Patrick's Tower is a tall stone windmill tower on Thomas Street West in the Liberties, Dublin, built in 1757 for George Roe's distillery. Standing about 40 metres high, it is one of the tallest structures in the area and a reminder of the whiskey-making that once filled this part of the city.
The story behind it
The tower was built in 1757 by George Roe & Co as part of the Thomas Street Distillery. It was a windmill, and its job was to grind malted barley for the whiskey made on the site. In the Liberties, an area long tied to brewing and distilling, a mill like this was part of everyday industry.
Wind power was later overtaken by steam, and the mill gradually lost its original purpose. Records mention a rebuilding by Roe's in the early 19th century, though the exact details are less certain. The tower outlasted the machinery it once served and the distillery around it, and it now stands among the buildings of the Digital Depot, where old industrial Dublin meets the modern city.
What to look for
- Look at the round, tapering profile of the stone tower, which rises well above the low buildings around it.
- Notice how the tower dominates the skyline of the Liberties, and try to spot it from side streets as you approach along Thomas Street.
- Check the old industrial buildings around its base, which give a sense of how large the distillery site once was.
- Think about the missing machinery: the tower once held the works that ground barley, and the height was there to catch the wind above neighbouring roofs.
Tips for your visit
- Ten to fifteen minutes is enough to see the tower from the outside and take photos, longer if you pair it with a walk through the Liberties.
- The tower stands within the Digital Depot grounds, so check current access before expecting to get close, and do not assume you can go inside.
- Daylight shows the stonework best, and the tower stands out clearly against a clear sky.
- The Guinness Storehouse and the rest of the Liberties are close by on foot, so it fits easily into a wider walk.
See it on a quest
The quest Dublin in Flames: The Whiskey Hellfire is a good way to see the tower, and its whiskey theme suits a place built for a distillery. You reach the tower on foot as one stop on a longer route through the area, the app tells you about it as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join.
