Croatia>Cavtat>Cavtat: Explore the Old Town
Walk through Cavtat old town, a small Dalmatian coastal town just 18 km south of Dubrovnik, where two thousand years of history survive in stone, canvas and silence.

Set on the wooded Rat peninsula, Cavtat was once the Roman city of Epidaurum. Later it lived under the Republic of Dubrovnik, and later still it became the birthplace of Vlaho Bukovac, Croatia's most celebrated painter. This walk connects all of it: ancient walls, a Rector's Palace, a small art gallery, a mausoleum that won the Grand Prix in Paris, a Franciscan monastery, and the house where a boy who sailed to New York came home and put paint on the walls.

Unhurried, sensory, and full of genuine stories. The antidote to crowded Dubrovnik, nine chapters away.

Meet the maker

The mission: Your story in Cavtat

Eighteen kilometres south of Dubrovnik, where the Rat peninsula pushes into the Adriatic, a smaller, quieter story has been unfolding for two thousand years.

Cavtat was once Epidaurum, a Roman city known throughout the ancient world.

It survived collapse, rebuilding, and centuries under the banner of the Dubrovnik Republic.

It gave Croatia one of its greatest painters and one of its most celebrated lawyers.

And somehow, through all of it, it stayed itself: unhurried, intimate, fragrant with pine and sea.

Today you will walk from the old walls at the edge of town all the way to the tip of the peninsula, through streets that have been carrying footsteps for a thousand years.

Each stop adds a layer. By the end, this town will feel less like a place you visited and more like a place you know.
