About Hungarian National Museum
The Hungarian National Museum is the country's national museum of history, housed in a large neoclassical building on Múzeum körút in Budapest. It grew out of a private donation made in 1802 and is closely tied to the story of Hungary's national awakening in the 19th century.
The story behind it
The museum begins with Count Ferenc Széchényi, who gave his large collection of books, coins and artworks to the nation in 1802. That gift became the seed of the national collection. As it grew, a purpose-built home was needed, and the architect Mihály Pollack designed the present building. Work began in the 1830s and it was completed in 1847.
The timing mattered. Only a year later, in the revolution of 1848, the museum's steps and garden became part of the national story. Its square is still linked with the March 15 commemorations, when Hungarians remember the start of the revolution. Today the building stands as a symbol of Hungarian cultural heritage and national freedom.
What to look for
- The columned portico and pediment on the front of the building are classic neoclassical design, and they give the facade its calm, monumental look.
- The wide front steps are worth a pause, since this is where crowds gather on the March 15 national holiday.
- The museum garden around the building has statues and stonework, and it is a pleasant place to slow down.
- The tree-lined Múzeum körút in front of the building shows how the museum anchors this whole district.
Tips for your visit
- You can go inside for the exhibitions on Hungarian history. Check current opening hours and ticket details before you go.
- Allow about 20 minutes for the facade and garden, and a couple of hours if you plan to tour the collections.
- Morning light is good for photographing the front of the building, and the garden is at its best in dry weather.
- Afterwards, try the specialty cafés along Múzeum körút, such as Budapest Baristas or Fekete, for a coffee break.
