About Muzeul de Stiinte Naturale Grigore Antipa (Museum of Natural Sciences)
The Grigore Antipa Museum of Natural Sciences is one of the most important natural history museums in Southeast Europe. It sits on Calea Victoriei in northern Bucharest, near Herastrau Park, and has been a landmark of Romanian science since 1834.
The museum was founded in 1834, but the current building opened on May 24, 1908. It's named after Grigore Antipa, the renowned Romanian biologist who directed the museum for decades and transformed it into an internationally respected institution.
The museum was one of the first in Europe to use immersive dioramas to display natural history, an approach that was innovative for the early 1900s and still makes the exhibits feel alive today. After a major renovation between 2009 and 2011, the museum added interactive technologies and modern displays while preserving its historic character.
The collection holds over 2 million specimens. Highlights include a skeleton of Deinotherium gigantissimum (a prehistoric elephant relative), an 11-metre-long artificial cave with stalactites, fossils, and bat colonies, and extensive collections covering every branch of the natural sciences.
The museum is especially popular with families. The interactive exhibits and the sheer scale of some of the displays, particularly the large mammals and dinosaur reconstructions, make it a hit with children.
If you're on a Questo quest through Bucharest's cultural quarter, the Antipa Museum is a stop where 2 million years of natural history are packed under one roof.
