About MacArthur Museum Brisbane

The MacArthur Museum Brisbane is a small museum in MacArthur Chambers, at the corner of Queen and Edward streets in the heart of Brisbane. It stands in the building that General Douglas MacArthur used as the headquarters of Allied forces in the South West Pacific during the Second World War. It is one of the best places in the city to understand how Brisbane became a wartime command centre.

The story behind it

In 1942, after leaving the Philippines, MacArthur set up his headquarters as Supreme Commander of Allied forces in the South West Pacific Area. Brisbane became the base for that command, and he worked from this central office building until his headquarters moved north later in the war. The city went from a quiet state capital to a place full of Australian and American servicemen, and the building sat at the centre of that change.

The museum was created to keep that chapter visible. It tells the story of the Pacific campaign and of the close wartime relationship between Australia and the United States, in the same building where many of the decisions were made.

What to look for

  • The building itself, MacArthur Chambers, whose street corner position puts you in the middle of Brisbane's business district.
  • The rooms and displays linked to MacArthur's headquarters, which show how a command centre operated inside an ordinary city office block.
  • The photographs, documents and objects about the Pacific War, which give a human scale to a campaign usually told through maps.
  • The wider setting on Queen Street, where grand older buildings stand beside modern towers and show how much the CBD has changed.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow about an hour inside if you like reading displays, less if you only want a quick look.
  • Check current opening hours and entry details before you go, as smaller museums often keep limited days.
  • Pair it with a walk around the surrounding blocks. Queen Street Mall, the General Post Office and several heritage buildings are all within a few minutes on foot.
  • Go in the morning or late afternoon if you want a cooler walk around the CBD, particularly in Brisbane's humid summer.
