About this quest

Herne the Hunter, the antlered ghost of Windsor, has haunted this town since Shakespeare named him in 1597. Tonight he walks again, and only you can turn him back.

Eight Bells for the Hunter is a self-guided puzzle walk through the old town beneath the castle walls. Every clue is hidden in something real: a bronze queen, a crooked house, Britain's shortest street, a king's death warrant. Every story you unlock is true. Solve all eight and you will learn the hour the Hunter comes.

Is this for you?

Who it's for

Ghost and folklore fans, couples and families with older children who like puzzles get just over an hour of true Windsor stories, with clues hidden in a bronze queen, the Crooked House and Britain's shortest street. It is free to play and starts whenever you arrive, not at a fixed evening time. Anyone who wants a live storyteller to quiz about Herne the Hunter should book a guided ghost walk instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Windsor ghost walk self-guided?
Yes. You play on your phone with no guide and no group to join. The app leads you from stop to stop through the old town beneath the castle walls, tells the true story of each place and sets a puzzle in something real in front of you.
Where does the ghost trail start and finish?
It starts at The Queen locomotive at Windsor Royal Station and finishes at the Park Street gate of the Long Walk, so it does not end where it began. On the way you pass Queen Victoria's statue, the Harte and Garter Hotel, the Guildhall, the Crooked House, Church Street and the parish church.
How long does it take?
Most players take just over an hour, around 65 minutes, including walking and solving the puzzles. The route is short, about 0.8 km through the old town, and you can pause and carry on later if you want a break.
Is it suitable for children?
It suits families with older children who enjoy puzzles and a spooky legend. The puzzles are rated medium difficulty and the story centres on an antlered ghost, so very young children may find the clues hard to follow and the theme a little eerie.
Do we need to book a time, and can we play as a group?
No booking is needed. It is free to play and you start whenever you like, rather than at a fixed tour time. Friends, couples or families can play together, and you can pause and pick it up again later.
