About El Nadador

El Nadador is a bronze sculpture by the Galician artist Francisco Leiro on the waterfront of Vigo, in the Pontevedra province of Galicia. It honours the effort and skill of swimmers, and it is one of the best-known pieces of public art in the city's port area.

The story behind it

Francisco Leiro, born in Cambados, is one of Galicia's best-known contemporary sculptors, and El Nadador is his tribute to swimming and the people who give themselves to it. Rather than a single statue on a plinth, it is a bronze group made of several pieces, placed so that the figures seem to be coming up out of the paving stones of the harbour district.

The idea is playful and a little surprising. The pavement becomes the water, and the swimmer appears mid-effort, with strength and determination in the bronze. One part of the group stands in Praza da Estrela, where the effort is written on the swimmer's face. Together the pieces tie a city that lives by the sea to sport and everyday street life.

What to look for

  • Notice how the bronze figures seem to rise straight out of the pavement, as if the ground were the surface of the water.
  • Look at the swimmer's face and arms, where Leiro shows the strain and concentration of the sport.
  • Walk around the group and into Praza da Estrela to see that it is made of several separate pieces, not one monument.
  • Look up from the sculpture to the harbour front nearby and see how well the work suits a city built around its ría.

Tips for your visit

  • The sculpture stands in the open street, so you can see it at any time without going inside anywhere. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough for a good look.
  • Daylight shows the texture of the bronze best, and a late afternoon visit gives soft light over the water nearby.
  • The address is on Rúa Cánovas del Castillo by Praza da Estrela, so it combines easily with a walk along the harbour front.
  • Pavements here are shared with everyday traffic and pedestrians, so take care while taking photos. For anything nearby with set times, check current opening hours.
